MIDDLEBURY, VT. (May 11, 2019) – Stevens Institute of Technology Women's Tennis team dropped their NCAA second round match up to No. 9 Tufts University 5-0 at the Proctor Tennis Courts on Saturday. Tufts improves to 9-9 on the year and moves on to the regional final on Sunday where they will take on No. 3 Middlebury College. Stevens put forth a great effort but had no answer for the NESCAC powerhouse Tufts.
"I'm so proud of the girls for how they competed and represented Stevens this weekend. Although it's always sad to see a season come to an end, there's no shame in bowing out of the NCAA tournament against a top-10 nationally ranked team," said Head Assistant Coach
Arik Zeevy. "We will miss our seniors very much next year; this is a special team and they should be very proud of what they accomplished. We will look to build off this year's season for years to come. The future of Stevens women's tennis is bright."
The Jumbos jumped out to a commanding 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles flights. The Ducks could not swing momentum into their favor in the singles competition. Sophomore's
Makenna Sargis and
Gabriella Tantillo dropped their respective singles flights which clinched the match for Tufts. The Ducks finish the year with an 11-8 record but will go down in the history books for the program. The women's tennis team were able to get over the hump after four consecutive Empire 8 runner-up finishes by winning the 2018 Empire 8 Championship. The historic win back in October punched their ticket to the NCAA Championships and in their first appearance they registered the programs first ever NCAA win against St. Joseph's-Long Island yesterday. Stevens returns some key pieces on a very talented roster and will look to build off this season's success as they transition to the Middle Atlantic Conference next year.
