Men's Tennis moves on to the Empire 8 Final

Men's Tennis blanks St. John Fisher 5-0 to set up rematch with Houghton

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (May 3, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis cruised past No. 3 St. John Fisher 5-0 in the Empire 8 semi-finals on Friday at the Mendon Racquet & Swim Club. With the win Stevens sets up a highly anticipated rematch with No. 1 Houghton College who snapped the Ducks conference match winning streak back on March 30th. Stevens jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after doubles competition and kept the shut out intact with two wins in singles competition. Houghton took out Alfred University in the top half semi-final 5-0 to make their second consecutive appearance in the Empire 8 championship final.

 "Our guys handled the postseason pressure very well today. We are all excited and ready to compete in tomorrow's championship match against Houghton," expressed Head Coach Steve Gachko.

Sophomore Mark Kanevsky and freshman Arjun Krishnan got the momentum rolling for the Ducks with a solid 8-0 win in the second doubles flight. The sophomore duo of Keegan Morris and Gabriel Sifuentes registered an impressive 8-2 win in the third doubles flight to increase the Ducks lead to 2-0. In one of the most competitive bouts of the afternoon, freshman Marc Feliu Gomez and sophomore Bryan Szayna faced some adversity in the No. 1 doubles flight. The duo came out on top in a back and forth affair with Dustin McCullough / Jonathan Harper by a score of 8-7 to complete the doubles sweep.

Stevens secured the match with straight-set wins by Feliu Gomez and Szayna in the No. 1 and 2 singles flights, respectively. The Ducks move their current winning streak to seven and their overall record to 13-9 on the year. Stevens will look to punch their ticket to the 2019 NCAA Championships tomorrow morning against Houghton.

Up Next: The men's tennis team match against No. 1 Houghton College will start at 10:00 AM at Mendon Racquet & Swim Club. This will be the final Empire 8 game Stevens will participate in and they're looking to finish their tenure in the conference on top.
