Baseball Ends Regular Season With 3-1 Win Over Houghton

Nathan Zuckerman and Matthew Pasko each recorded an RBI as the Ducks topped Houghton 3-1 Monday afternoon.

HOUGHTON, N.Y. (May 6, 2019)  – Freshman Ryan Finegan went 3-for-5 at the plate and scored one run as the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team topped Houghton College 3-1 Monday afternoon at Kerr-Pegula Athletic Complex.

Junior Chandler Brierley struck out five batters in just 1.2 innings of work while sophomore Michael Frissora (2-0) earned the win with three strikeouts in three innings pitched. Senior Donny Gherardi registered his first career save as he held off the Highlanders from tying the game in the final inning. The Ducks head into postseason play with an overall record of 17-19.

Houghton's Holden Deres fell to 2-5 on the mound after giving up three runs and eight hits in five innings. The Highlanders end their season with a record of 11-22.

"We are so proud of our team for doing what we needed to do to secure second place, in what is a very competitive Empire 8 Conference," expressed head coach Kristaps Aldins. "Today was truly a team win. All of our pitchers were outstanding and they were able to bear down and make some big pitches with the game on the line. We are excited to head up north for our conference tournament with the team in good spirits and playing well."

Finegan recorded his first hit in the top of the second with a single to left field. After senior Matt Branco walked, junior Patrick Rood reached first on an error by the third baseman, which allowed Finegan to score and the two runners to advance one base.

Sophomore Nathan Zuckerman followed with a sac-fly to center field to bring in Branco before an RBI single by senior Matthew Pasko gave the Ducks their third run of the inning.

The Highlanders were unable to score until the bottom of the ninth when Jeremy Newswanger singled to left center to send home David Wessells. With two outs, Ben Closson had the chance to tie the game but ended up popping up Branco at third for the final out.
