NEW LONDON, Conn. (August 30, 2019) – Junior
Jacob Curtis converted classmate
Stephen Johnson's corner kick in the 83rd minute to lead No. 24 Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer over Mitchell College 3-2 Friday in both teams' season opener at Alumni Field.
Curtis finished with his first career multi-goal match as Stevens scored three times over the final 45 minutes to erase a one-goal halftime deficit. Sophomore
Matthew Pinho began the comeback in the 50th minute with the Ducks' first marker of the 2019 season. Curtis gave the Ducks their first lead 26 minutes later, heading in sophomore
Leo Musacchia's free kick. The Little Silver, New Jersey native last found the back of the net against then-conference opponent Elmira on Oct. 14, 2017 - a span of 948 minutes across 21 matches, including the first half against Mitchell.
Junior
Aedan Boriotti made two saves in his Stevens debut to earn the victory. The Sea Girt, New Jersey native deflected Daniel Hotaling's try from the top of the box in the 89th minute to secure the win. Hotaling had tied the match nearly 10 minutes earlier.
Seth Strader had four saves for the Mariners, who fell to Stevens for the second straight season. Quinn Outerbridge also scored for Mitchell. Tonight's contest marked just the second-ever match between the programs.
Turning Point
- Mitchell's Nolan Clack committed a foul in the 80th minute, which led to a Stevens corner.
- Johnson sent the ensuing corner kick into the far edge of the six-yard box, where the six-foot-three Curtis headed in his second goal of the match.
Inside the Numbers
- Stevens outshot Mitchell, 15-7, including a 7-4 edge in shots on net.
- The Ducks held a 4-2 edge in corners, including a 2-0 margin in the second half.
- Pinho and Johnson led the team with three shots each. Hotaling also fired three attempts to pace Mitchell.
- Johnson and Musacchia were joined by sophomore Gianni Falvo in recording an assist. The assist for the Bernardsville, N.J. native was the second point of his collegiate career.
- Freshman Jake Jacquemot drew the start in his collegiate debut. Also seeing their first action for the Ducks were Boriotti and freshmen Fritz Kabeiseman, Brendan Mulligan, Danny Yun and Bruno Andino.
- Stevens won its opening match for the third straight season and for the fourth time in the last five years.
Unsung Heroes
- The defensive group held the home team to just four shots, and two shots on net, over the final 45 minutes. Controlled play helped Stevens control the possession battle in the midfield and didn't allow the hosts to sustain offensive rhythm. The Mariners earned just one corner kick on the evening.

- "Good win on the road. Credit to Mitchell for pushing us all the way. [It] was a solid performance to build upon."
