Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Stevens Athletic Communications

No. 24/13 Women’s Soccer Falls at No. 7/6 Messiah

Women's soccer's valiant effort falls just short at nationally-ranked Messiah.

GRANTHAM, Pa. (August 31, 2019)  – Sophomore Izzy DiDario and junior Erika McCarthy combined for seven saves, but No. 24/13 Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer fell to No. 7/6 Messiah College Saturday in a non-conference fixture at Shoemaker Field.

Nine different players had scoring chances for the Ducks, who were unable to solve Messiah's Lydia Ewing, who made six saves to earn the shutout. Ewing is unscored upon over 180 minutes to open the season.

DiDario and McCarthy kept Stevens in the match, stopping seven of Messiah's nine shots on goal. DiDario drew the start and made three saves, while McCarthy came on at halftime and recorded four saves.

All-American Brooke Firestone netted both goals for the Falcons, who improved to 2-0. Stevens dropped to 1-1.

Turning Point
  • DiDario stopped Sunny Gelnovatch's one-time try in the sixth minute, however the ball caromed to Jessie Fisher, who drove the ball across the box to the right post.
  • Firestone jumped into the play and headed the ball past DiDario for her first goal of the year.
  • Firestone would add to Messiah's lead in the 74th minute, sliding a ball through Stevens' defensive traffic following a corner kick.

Inside the Numbers
  • Messiah had a 19-15 advantage in shots, including a 9-6 margin in shots on net.
  • Sophomore Ally Wanzor led the Ducks in shots for the second straight match. The Jackson, New Jersey native fired four attempts. Kayla Herr joined Gelnovatch in matching Wanzor's four attempts.
  • Messiah outearned Stevens in corners, 11-8.
  • Freshman Catalina Abusada drew the first start of her collegiate career.

Unsung Heroes
  • Trailing by just one at the intermission, Stevens came out firing in the second half. Sophomore Fiona Matthews fired the first shot of the second half and Stevens held possession for the majority of the first 10 minutes of the final stanza, earning four corners.
  • The Ducks showed the same resiliency following Firestone's first goal, recording the next scoring chance of the match, however, Ewing pushed aside Abusada's try.

From the Sidelines (Head Coach Jeff Parker)
  • "Tough result for us to take on the road tonight, but hard to find much fault with our energy, attitude and effort. Not many teams have the courage to go forward and leave everything on the line and we were pretty close to doing that tonight. Big respect to the Messiah program as they managed to find the goals in the contest, but we will learn and move forward as we head into Engineering Cup weekend."

Up Next
  • No. 24/13 Stevens will take on its second nationally-ranked opponent in as many matches, when the Ducks welcome No. 10/10 Johns Hopkins University to the DeBaun Athletic Complex to open the 16th annual Engineering Cup.
  • The Ducks are 2-1 all-time against the Blue Jays, with both victories coming in the NCAA Tournament. The teams have met just once in the regular season, with Johns Hopkins coming away with a 6-0 victory in the 2005 season opener.
