Field Hockey Falls in Final Seconds of Double Overtime at No. 10 Montclair St.

Ducks push top-10 opponent to OT for the first time this season

MONTCLAIR, N.J. (Sept. 11, 2019) – In a back-and-forth game looking almost certainly bound for overtime, Elizabeth Cimilluca scored with just 12 second remaining in double overtime to give No. 10 Montclair State a 2-1 victory over the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team Wednesday night at Sprague Field.

The Ducks pushed the Red Hawks into an overtime game for the first time this season, nearly becoming the first team since 2013 to knock off a ranked opponent. On the year, Montclair St. remains undefeated at 5-0 while Stevens drops to 2-3 on the young season.

After MSU was able to jump ahead early with a goal in the third minute, the Ducks defense tightened and did not allow a goal for the next 77 minutes of game action.

In the third quarter, Stevens got an equalizer off an penalty corner when Ireland Tawney found the back of the net when she gathered an assist by fellow senior Michaela Thompson, spun left and fired from five yards away.

Turning Point
  • In the final minute of action, MSU was awarded back-to-back penalty corners.
  • The Red Hawks played the ball to the top of the circle before the ball was pushed to the left side and fired in from 10 yards out.

Inside the Numbers
  • The Red Hawks held an 18-10 advantage in total shots, but the teams were dead even with eight shots on goal each.
  • Stevens goalie Emily Franco racked up five saves for the third consecutive game.
  • Of the Ducks' five total games on the year, four of them have been decided by one goal (2-2).
  • The goal from Tawney was her first of the season and the 16th of her career.
  • Offensively, Brynn Froehlich led the way with four total shots while Tawney had the most shots on goal with three.

Unsung Heros
  • The Ducks entire defensive group stifled the Red Hawks potent offensive attack, especially in the second half.
  • In the final two quarters of regulation, Stevens held MSU to a total of just three shots and none in the third period.
  • In total, the Ducks allowed just one goal in regulation to a team who came in averaging 2.75 goals per contest.

From the Sidelines (Head Coach Meredith Spencer-Blaetz)
  • "I'm very proud of the team tonight. We had grit and intensity which will fuel us for the rest of the season."
  • "Of course the outcome isn't what we wanted, but we made a statement tonight and showed what Stevens field hockey is made of."
