HOBOKEN, N.J. (Sept. 14, 2019) –
Alyssa Appleby,
Allison Buffenbarger and
Jaymie Fiebel all scored their first goal of the season to help the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team grab a 3-1 victory over Union Saturday at DeBaun Athletic Complex.
The Ducks scored goals in the 28th, 30th and 34th minutes to take a commanding 3-0 lead and move to 3-3 on the year while Union dropped to 1-2.
Fiebel got the scoring started for Stevens after tipping a shot by
Michaela Thompson into the back of the net for the fourth goal of her career.
Just two minutes later, the Ducks struck again when Appleby found the back of the net thanks to an assist from Fiebel.
With 33:18 on the clock in the third quarter, Buffenbarger was able to grow the lead to three off a penalty corner when she blasted a shot in from the edge of the circle.
Turning Point
- Just after the 27-minute mark of the contest, Thompson was able to steal the ball away from a Union defender.
- The senior from Manasquan, N.J., fired a shot from just inside the circle and Fiebel was able to tip the shot into the left side of the goal.
Inside the Numbers
- The Ducks held a huge 30-16 advantage in total shots, including taking a total of 18 shots in the second quarter.
- Stevens also had the edge in penalty corners (18-6).
- In goal, Emily Franco and Kiera Kennedy combined to make nine saves and allowed just one goal in the match.
- Offensively, Stevens was led by Thompson and Fiebel who each had five shots apiece.
Unsung Hero
- Coming off the bench, Appleby registered three total shots as well as the fourth goal of her career.
