Morton Produces a Double-Double as Women’s Volleyball Drops Pair of Matches Against No. 6 Johnson & Wales and Springfield

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Sept. 14, 2019)Allie Morton recorded a total of 25 assists, 13 digs and eight kills in two matches Saturday as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team fell 3-1 at No. 6 Johnson & Wales and 3-0 against Springfield at Wildcat Center in the JWU Tri-Match.

The Ducks picked up a set win over JWU in the first matchup of the day before falling 13-25, 13-25, 25-22, 18-22. In the second contest, Springfield was able to grab the win by a 23-25, 21-25, 12-25 final line.

With the losses, Stevens falls to 2-5 overall on the year while the Wildcats move to 7-1 and the Pride increase their record to 8-2.

Morton was fantastic in the first contest of the day, nearly recording a triple-double with 12 assists, 10 digs and seven kills. The freshman from Louisville, Ky., hit .231 in the match while also adding three service aces.

Volleys and Points (Match One)
  • After trading points back-and-forth early in the first set, the Wildcats pulled away late by scoring 14 of the final 18 points of the stanza. 
  • Leading 6-5 in the second set, JWU went on a quick 5-1 run to take an early lead.
  • A late 9-0 run put the second set away for the Wildcats to take a 2-0 advantage.
  • The Ducks fell behind 10-8 in the third set but quickly rattled off five consecutive points to take the lead.
  • Stevens won four of the final six points of the third set to grab a 25-22 set win.
  • JWU used a 6-2 run in the middle of set four to take an 18-12 lead and was able to keep the Ducks at arms-length to grab the 25-18 victory.
Match Point (Match One)
  • Leading 24-18, the Wildcats took advantage of an attack error by Kristen Edmiston to seal the win.
Inside the Numbers (Match One)
  • JWU held a 51-37 advantage in kills as well as a .276 to .119 edge in attack percentage.
  • In her first action of the 2019 season, Corinne Dougherty led Stevens with eight kills.
  • Morton along with Shelby Stewart each added seven kills apiece for the Ducks while Casey King contributed six.
  • Kathleen Riegner finished just one dig shy of a double-double with 12 assists and nine digs.
Unsung Hero (Match One)
  • Freshman Ava Smithing had a team-high .357 hitting percentage with five kills as well as a block in the match.
Volleys and Points (Match Two)
  • The Ducks jumped out to an early 15-11 lead thanks to a quick 5-0 run led by kills from Stewart and Edmiston. 
  • The Pride battled back and used a 5-0 run of their own to re-take the lead they would not relinquish to take set one 25-23.
  • Trailing 11-8 in set number two, Springfield rattled off eight straight points to grab a 15-11 edge.
  • After Stevens cut the deficit to just one, the Pride scored four of the final six points of the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • Springfield jumped out to an early 15-3 advantage in the final stanza and never looked back, winning the set 25-12.
Match Point (Match Two)
  • The Pride put the match away with a kill by Ashley Tanner, her fourth kill of the contest.
Inside the Numbers (Match Two)
  • In the third and final set, the Pride hit a whopping .583 compared to .063 for Stevens.
  • Springfield was able to take home the victory despite the Ducks holding a 5-4 edge in service aces.
  • Offensively, the Ducks were led by King and Dougherty who registered six kills apiece.
  • Jillian Roumbanis and Elizabeth Chu each produced double-digit digs with 12 and 11, respectively.
Unsung Hero
  • Roumbanis was fantastic defensively for Stevens, racking up 12 kills without committing a single error in the match. 
  • The junior from San Francisco, Calif., added a pair of assists and has now produced double-digit digs in five of the Ducks' seven matches on the year.

  • "Unfortunately, the outcomes weren't what we wanted them to be, but a lot of good things came from today. We've seen some really great teams so far this season and continue to learn a lot about ourselves."
  • "We had some players really step up today, especially on defense. We're confident that once we find our groove we will be a very strong force offensively. We're thankful for these opportunities to play such talented teams and are excited to start conference play."
Up Next
  • The Ducks will become the first Stevens program in the 2019-20 academic year to play a conference match in the MAC Freedom as they take on Wilkes University at 7:00 p.m. inside Canavan Arena. 
  • This is believed to be the first-ever matchup between these two new conference foes.
