Early Fireworks Send RV/No. 25 Women’s Soccer Over Scranton 2-1

Panko scores 12 seconds into the match, Saade finds the net in 19th minute to lead women's soccer to victory.

SCRANTON, Pa. (September 21, 2019)  – Senior Julia Panko scored 12 seconds into the match to jumpstart RV/No. 25 Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer over University of Scranton 2-1 Saturday, in a non-conference fixture played at Weiss Field.

Senior Gabby Saade scored in the 19th minute for the Ducks, who evened their record at 3-3-1. The victory snapped a two-match losing streak. It is believed to be just the second meeting the programs. The first meeting, which took place in the opening round of the 2004 NCAA Tournament, ended in a scoreless tie.

Following the opening kickoff, sophomore Ally Wanzor and Panko teamed up for a give-and-go. Wanzor's ball sprung Panko free through the left side of the 18. Panko calmly flicked the ball over the goalkeeper's head for the opening tally of the match. Panko's goal was just two seconds shy of matching the program record for the fastest goal - Alicia Vandersluis found the back of the net just 10 seconds into the match against Maritime College on Oct. 11, 2006.

Erin Toburen scored in the 35th minute for the Royals, who fell to 1-2-3.

Sophomore goalkeeper Izzy DiDario made three saves to earn her first victory of the year. Amanda Steinberg made six for the Royals.

Turning Point
  • Following a Scranton corner in the 18th minute, Stevens quickly countered.
  • Junior Erica O'Kelly began the play and found Wanzor, who connected with a streaking Panko.
  • Panko touched the ball over to Saade, who drifted to her right and laced a crossing right-footed shot back that found the far left corner of the net. The West Windsor, New Jersey native leads the team with two game-winning goals.

Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens held a slim 11-10 margin in shots, although eight of the Ducks' 11 shots were on target.
  • Saade and Panko led Stevens with three shots each. Toburen recorded a match-high four attempts for Scranton.
  • The Ducks earned six corners against just three for the Royals.
  • The teams combined for just 11 fouls.

Unsung Heroes
  • Disruptive play in the field and sustained pressure in the attacking third kept Scranton away from dangerous areas. The Royals earned just one corner in the second half and fired just one shot on frame.

From the Sidelines (Head Coach Jeff Parker)
  • "Good road result and an important performance by our squad today. If you don't arrive for kickoff, you might miss something and it was a firecracker combination between Ally and Jules to get things started. I thought our mindset and tactical decisions were at a very high level right from the start and to be able to impose that away from home is a big thing for us to be able to do. Everyone on the roster contributed today and that will be one of the biggest determiners of where our season is going to take us. Looking forward to getting right back at it on Tuesday at home versus Vassar."
