Women’s Volleyball Grabs Fourth Straight Win in Five Set Thriller Over Scranton

Sara Hain and Shelby Stewart Both Racked Up Double-Digit Kills in the Win

SELINSGROVE, PA. (September 27, 2019) – Led by double-digit kills from seniors Sara Hain and Shelby Stewart and a career-high 30 digs from junior Jillian Roumbanis, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team picked up a 3-2 (20-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-27, 15-9) victory over Scranton University Friday at Orlando W. Houts Gymnasium.

It is the first five-set win for Stevens since Oct. 20, 2018 against St. John Fisher. The Ducks have now won four straight games and move to 7-6 overall on the year.

Scranton, meanwhile, got a game-high 16 kills from Jillian Graham as they dropped to 8-6 this season.

Hain led the way for Stevens offensively, hitting .571 and racking up 13 kills to go along with four blocks.

On the other side of the ball, Stewart was a force defensively, producing a season-high eight total blocks while also adding 11 kills and a .385 attack percentage.

After picking up 20 digs in Wednesday's win over King's College, Roumbanis followed it up with a 30-dig performance.

Volleys and Points
  • The two teams battled back-and-forth throughout most of the opening set of the match.
  • After Stevens took an early 2-0 lead, Scranton rattled off three straight points to take the lead.
  • The Royals did not relinquish the lead the rest of the match despite the Ducks tying the match five times.
  • With the score tied at 18, Scranton finally pulled away closing the set on a 7-2 run.
  • The Ducks came out hot in the second set, grabbing the first four points and six of the first eight.
  • After the Royals fought back to take a 15-13 lead, Stevens responded with another 4-0 run to re-take the lead.
  • Scranton would not go away, however, and held a 22-21 edge late in the set. The Ducks answered once again by winning four of the final five points to even the match at one.
  • The third set was defined by runs, with the Royals being the first to use one taking an early 4-2 lead thanks to a 4-0 flurry.
  • Stevens used a 4-0 streak of their own trailing 10-9 to take a 13-10 lead.
  • The two teams then traded a pair of quick 3-0 runs late in the set, leaving the Ducks with a 19-16 advantage.
  • Leading 22-20 late, Stevens put the contest away with a 3-1 run to win the set 25-21.
  • In the fourth stanza, the Royals were able to take an early 9-5 lead thanks to a 5-1 run.
  • The Ducks trailed 22-17 late in the set but rattled off five consecutive points to tie the contest.
  • After fighting off a set point at 25-24, Scranton grabbed three straight points to send the match to a fifth set tiebreaker.
  • In the fifth and final stanza, the Ducks and the Royals traded points much like they had throughout the entirety of the match.
  • Leading 9-8, Stevens was able to close the match on a 7-2 run to earn their first five-set win on the year.
Match Point
  • The Ducks took advantage of an attack error by Eryn Boken in the fifth set to pick up the 3-2 victory.
Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens hit .208 in the match, including racking up a .364 attack percentage in the final set while holding Scranton to -.056.
  • The Ducks also held a huge 12-3 advantage in blocks in the contest.
  • Sophomore Kathleen Riegner ran a stellar offense all night, picking up 45 assists while also adding seven digs and three service aces.
  • Along with Roumbanis, sophomore Elizabeth Chu and senior Casey King both had double-digit digs in the game with 14 and 11, respectively.
  • After starting the year 2-5, Stevens has now won five of its last six contests to put their record over .500 for the first time this season.
Unsung Hero
  • King nearly produced her fourth straight double-double with 11 digs and nine kills in the contest.
Chasing History
  • With a season-high eight blocks on the night, Stewart now sits just 17 blocks from breaking the program record for blocks (428) in a career currently held by Maggie Kowalska.
  • After hitting .571 in the match, Hain now has a season attack percentage of .440 and a career percentage of .340. If the season ended today, the reigning MAC Freedom Offensive Player of the Week would set both the career and single-season program record for attack percentage.
From the Sidelines (Head Coach Annie McShea)
  • "Tonight was all about protecting the serve and going on as many runs as we could. Scranton was solid and didn't just give points away, so we had to fight for every one."
  • "We stuck with the game plan and won the long rallies when it really mattered. We were high energy and clean down the stretch, which led to our first five set win."
Up Next
  • The Ducks will close out play in the River Hawk Invitational hosted by Susquehanna University Saturday when they take on RV Susquehanna and No. 20 Wesleyan University at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
  • Live stats will be available for both contests while live video will be available for just the contest against Susquehanna.
  • All-time, the River Hawks hold a 2-1 edge over Stevens. The Ducks did, however, win the last contest between the two on Sept. 16, 2018.
  • Wesleyan has won the only matchup between the two teams, grabbing a 3-1 victory on Sept. 30, 2017.
