HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 7, 2019) – Sophomore
Adam Silva delivered a spectacular blast in the 72nd minute to lead No. 24 Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer to a 1-0 victory over Vassar College Saturday in a non-conference fixture at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
Sophomore
Matthew Pinho began the game-winning play with a free kick after a Vassar foul. Junior Matthew Hammos received Pinho's drive and found Silva well outside the 18. Silva took a quick survey as he received the ball and, after finding himself in space, drove a long, looping shot from approximately 25 yards out. The ball sailed through the Hoboken night and crossed the mouth of the goal, neatly tucking into the top right corner to snap a scoreless tie. The marker was Silva's second of the season and third career game-winner. Silva also just missed a bicycle kick goal earlier in the contest.
Junior
Aedan Boriotti marshalled his first clean sheet of the season. The Sea Girt, New Jersey native made one save in earning the shutout. The victory moved Stevens to 3-0 for the first time since 2013. Vassar suffered its first loss off the season to fall to 2-1-1.
Luke Lefeber did not register a save in defeat for Vassar. With starting goalkeeper Will Marment sitting out with a red card, Lefeber nearly suffered the same fate early in the contest. The Vassar netminder came out of position to thwart a Stevens threat, but committed a hard tackle while playing the ball that easily could have drawn a red card. A yellow card was issued instead and the ensuing free kick was blocked.
Stevens improved to 15-3-2 all-time against Vassar and has won each of the last 11 meetings.
Inside the Numbers
- The teams combined for just 21 shots, with only two registering on net.
- Silva and Vassar's Owen Fauth each took a match-high five shots.
- Freshman Bruno Andino drew his first collegiate start.
- Junior Andrew Demeter saw his first action of the season.
- Stevens outearned Vassar in corner kicks, 5-2, including a 4-0 margin in the first half.
Unsung Heroes
- Junior Jacob Curtis played an important role in positioning Stevens' defensive unit that disrupted Vasssar's offensive rhythm in the attacking third. Curtis and sophomore Gianni Falvo played all 90 minutes on the back line.
