MONTCLAIR, N.J. (Sept. 7, 2019) – Senior
Shelby Stewart produced a pair of contests with double-digit kills while also registering a double-double as the Stevens Institute of Technology Women's Volleyball team defeated the United States Merchant Marine Academy 3-0 before dropping a matchup against Montclair St. 3-0.
The Ducks took home the first match with set wins of 25-17, 25-16, 25-10 and lost the second contest 22-25, 18-25, 23-25 to move to 2-3 on the young season.
Stewart produced 11 kills in each contest while adding 15 digs in the contest against MSU for her third career double-double. Additionally, the senior from Powell, Ohio, added six total blocks in the victory over USMMA. In two matches, Stewart was able to notch 22 kills, 23 digs, eight blocks and five services aces on the day.
Volleys and Points (Match One)
- The first set was a back and forth battle, with neither team leading by more than four points until the halfway mark.
- Trailing 14-13, Stevens erupted for a 10-0 run to take a commanding lead and eventually took the set 25-17.
- The Ducks found themselves behind once again in the second set, this time by a score of 9-6. Stevens responded with a 6-0 run to take a three-point lead they would not give up the rest of the set.
- Stevens put the set away late, scoring 11 of the final 13 points to grab a 25-16 victory.
- Unlike the first two sets, the Ducks came out of the gates firing in the third set, winning 14 of the first 17 points of the set.
- After the Mariners climbed back to within 10, Stevens put the game away with a 5-0 run to close things out.
Match Point (Match One)
- Leading 24-10 in set three, Stewart put the game away with a kill to clinch the win for the Ducks.
Inside the Numbers (Match One)
- The Ducks held a huge 9-1 advantage in total blocks in the contest.
- Stevens also had the edge in attack percentage, hitting .256 in the match while holding USMMA to -.010.
- The third set showed the biggest discrepancy in attack percentage, with the Ducks hitting .318 and the Mariners hitting -.071.
- Allie Morton fantastic in the contest, producing eight kills while hitting a career-best .467.
- Stevens registered 10 total service aces in the match.
Unsung Hero (Match One)
- Setter Kathleen Riegner ran the offense well while also providing some offensive firepower herself.
- Riegner picked up 18 assists, five service aces and eight digs in the match.
Volleys and Points (Match Two)
- Trailing 8-5 in the first set, Stevens went on an 8-0 run to grab a lead in the middle of the set.
- MSU responded with a run of their own, scoring five of the next seven points to get back into the contest.
- With Stevens leading 20-18 late in the stanza, the Red Hawks went on a 7-2 run to steal the first set 25-22.
- In the second set, MSU was able to use a 10-0 run to take an early 14-7 lead.
- The Ducks were able to cut the deficit to four, but could not get any closer as the Red Hawks used a 7-1 to put the set away and grab a set win 25-18.
- Another run propelled MSU to an early lead in set three as they grabbed an 11-5 lead.
- The Ducks responded, however, with a 6-1 run of their own to get back to within one.
- With the match tied at 22, the Red Hawks were able to get back-to-back kills to grab the match victory.
Match Point (Match Two)
- A double block by Caitlin Lange and Victoria Tennon ended the match and sealed the win for MSU.
Inside the Numbers (Match Two)
- The two teams were almost identical in both aces and blocks with the Red Hawks holding a one-point advantage in both categories.
- MSU grabbed a 42-29 edge in kills and hit .207 in the match compared to just .051 for Stevens.
- Along with Stewart, Elizabeth Chu also had double-digit digs with 13 in the match.
- Sara Hain was a force at the net in the contest, picking up four blocks while adding nine kills and hitting a team-high .235.
Unsung Hero (Match Two)
- Chu was all over the court defensively for the Ducks in the match.
- The sophomore out of Old Tappan, N.J., produced 13 digs, five assists and three service aces in the loss.

- Another tri-match is on the schedule next for the Ducks as they will travel to Providence, R.I., to face off against No. 6 Johnson and Wales as well as Springfield College Saturday, Sept. 14 at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., respectively.
