HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 18, 2020) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team got double figure scoring from both sophomore
Jess Broad and junior
Lily Taeuber in a 77-62 defeat at the hands of Misericordia University Saturday inside Canavan Arena.
Leading by six points at halftime, the Cougars outscored the Ducks 20-8 in the third quarter and shot 43.4 percent from the floor as a team to remain unbeaten in MAC Freedom competition this season.
Misericordia was led offensively by Tessa Zamolyi and Jessica Barth, who both produced double-doubles in the victory. Zamolyi led all scorers with 20 points and 13 rebounds while Barth finished the contest with 16 points and 11 boards.
Broad was just one rebound shy of joining the Cougar pair in the double-double club, producing a team-high 15 point and nine boards to go along with three blocks and a steal. Taeuber, meanwhile, racked up a season-high 11 points and five rebounds in her first start of the season.
Trailing 15-7 halfway through opening quarter, the Ducks went on a 13-3 run over the next 4:31 to take their first lead of the contest at 20-18.
The Cougars responded immediately, however, bridging the first and second quarters with six consecutive points to re-take the lead they would not relinquish again.
Nearing the end of the first half, Misericordia swelled the lead to as many as nine points after holding Stevens scoreless for over four minutes of game action.
Junior
Annetta Panayides made sure the contest did not get out of reach though, scoring the final five points of the half for the Ducks including knocking down her first career 3-pointer as time expired in the half.
With the score 38-32 coming out of the locker room, the Cougars held Stevens to just three made shots attempts and 0 for 4 from 3-point-range in the third quarter to extend the lead to 58-40 at the end of the stanza.
Stevens trailed 77-56 with 1:26 remaining in the fourth but managed to score the final seven points of the contest to make the final score 77-62.
Turning Point
- Broad knocked down back-to-back jumpers for the Ducks in the beginning minutes of the third quarter to bring the deficit back to single digits to two separate occasions.
- With the score 45-36 with 7:12 left in the third, Misericordia went on an 11-2 run capped off by a 3-pointer from Erica Haefele to extend the lead to 18 and give the Cougars some breathing room.
Inside the Numbers
- Misericordia held a significant advantage down low, outscoring Stevens 36-18 in points in the paint.
- The teams were almost even in a number of categories including bench points (19-18 Misericordia), second chance points (12-10 Stevens), points off turnovers (17-16 Misericordia) and fast break points (12-11 Misericorida).
- The Ducks knocked down a season-high 16 free throws on 22 total attempts, led by a 6 for 6 effort from Christina Li.
- Li and senior Emily Nunez both produced eight points in the loss while Panayides and sophomore Vanessa Elliott added seven apiece.
- Broad had three blocks in the contest, giving her nine total in her last four contests and is tied for second in the MAC Freedom in blocks in conference games.
Unsung Hero
- Li filled up the stat sheet in the contest, finishing with a team-high five assists along with her eight points, four boards and three steals.
