Women’s Fencing Sweeps Field, Takes Home Team Title in Army Invite

Five Different Fencers Produce Double-Digit Wins in the Meet

WEST POINT, N.Y. (January 18, 2020) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team continued their torrid start to the season by winning the team title with a perfect 7-0 day in the Jonathan Turnbull Army Fencing Invitational Saturday.

The Ducks got double-digit victories from freshman Leigha Capra, freshman Claire McNeill, senior Teny Odaimi, sophomore Kiera Barnes and sophomore Bayla Gellerstein to improve their overall record to 19-1 on the season. Additionally, Odiami earned her 100th career victory in the meet.

Since dropping their first bout of the season against Wellesley College, Stevens has now rattled off 19 consecutive victories to break the previous single season program record of 16 set in the 2017-18 season.

The seven victories featured one exhibition win over the Royal Military College of Canada as well as regular season wins over Army-West Point, the City College of New York, Drew University, Detroit Mercy University, the United States Naval Academy and Cleveland State University.

Stevens was tested throughout the invitational, with their narrowest victory coming in a thrilling 14-13 win over Drew to seal the tournament team title.

As a team, the Ducks were led by the epee squad, which finished at 52-11 on the day, followed by foil at 46-17 and rounded out by sabre at 45-18.

Army-West Point (Win 21-6)
  • At epee, Stevens got a pair of wins each from both Capra and Burns as well as single victories from Keira Mizzi and Odaimi to win 6-3.
  • Sophomore Kayleigh Kubit went a perfect 3-0 while seniors Nicole Strezewski and Allison Urban-Spillane added two apiece for a 7-2 result at foil.
  • Barnes and junior Kian Wissemann has three victories each at sabre while Gellerstein and sophomore Gabriela Onellli added one each for an 8-1 win.
City College of New York (Win 26-1)
  • In the most dominant win of the tournament, the epee squad went a perfect 9-0 thanks to three wins each from Capra, McNeill and Odaimi.
  • Senior Caitlin Uang and freshman Zoe Casten went 3-0 and freshman Brianna Ellis picked up a pair of wins for an 8-1 victory at foil.
  • At sabre, Wissemann and Gellerstein won all three bouts, Barnes grabbed a pair of wins and Onelli picked up the last for a 9-0 sweep.
Drew University (Win 14-13)
  • The epee squad carried most of the weight for most tightly contested bout of the season, going 7-2 thanks to three wins from McNeill and two each by Capra and Odaimi.
  • Kubit produced two victories and Strezewski and Urban-Spillane added one apiece for the Ducks at foil.
  • Barnes went 2-1 and Gellerstein added another win at sabre in a 3-6 defeat, the lone one of the day for the weapon.
Royal Military College of Canada (Win 21-6)
  • Capra and McNeill were a perfect 3-0 while OdaImi added two wins for an 8-1 victory at epee.
  • The Ducks spread the wealth at foil with seven different fencers earning at least one win, led by freshman Ashley McDermott who was the lone competitor with two.
  • At sabre, Stevens got three wins from Barnes and two from Gellerstein in a 6-3 2 win.
Detroit Mercy (Win 20-7)
  • The Ducks were perfect at epee with three wins each from Capra, McNeill and OdaImi.
  • Strezewski led the foil squad with a pair of wins while Kubit, McDermott and Urban-Spillane had one each.
  • At sabre, Stevens got three wins from Barnes and Gellerstein along with one from Wissemann.
United States Naval Academy (Win 25-2)
  • For the second consecutive bout, Stevens got perfection at epee from the usual suspects, Capra, McNeill and OdaImi.
  • Casten, Ellis and Uang had two victories each while Strezewski and Urban-Spillane added one apiece for an 8-1 win at foil.
  • The Ducks also won 8-1 at sabre thanks to three wins each from Barnes and Gellerstein and two more by Onelli.
Cleveland State (Win 16-11)
  • Capra had two wins and McNeill and OdaImi produced one each in what was the lone loss at epee on the day for the Ducks.
  • Urban-Spillane went a perfect 3-0, Kubit won two bouts and Strezewski grabbed another win for a 6-3 victory at foil.
  • Sabre closed the invitational with a 6-3 win thanks to three victories from Barnes, two by Wissemann and one from Gellerstein.
