No. 4 Men’s Volleyball Tops Arcadia to Remain Unbeaten in MAC Play

Bittker and Lehman Produce 16 kills apiece in the win

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 20, 2020) – Senior David Lehman and junior Jack Bittker both produced 16 kills to lead the fourth-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Arcadia University Wednesday inside Canavan Arena. 
 

The Ducks won the first two sets 25-23 and 25-20 before dropping set three 25-19 and bouncing back to win set four 25-16 to move to 3-0 in Middle Atlantic Conference play. 


Stevens hit .286 as a team including registering a .412 attack percentage in the fourth set while holding the Knights to a .218 overall attack percentage. 


Lehman finished the match with six digs, three blocks and a pair of service aces and hit .237 while Bittker added eight digs and hit .289 in the victory. 


Junior Ryan Byrne and senior Jonathan Frenzel were also both productive in the contest as Byrne registered 10 kills and six digs and Frenzel finished with nine kills on just 13 swings for a .615 attack percentage. 


Arcadia was led offensively by Quinn Bailey and Dan Paraskevov who finished with 13 and 12 kills, respectively, as the reigning MAC champions fell to 0-2 in conference play. 


Senior setter Grant Burden, who leads all of NCAA Division III with 11.1 assists per set, finished the match with 46 assists for his fifth 40+ assists match of the season. 


The Ducks are now the lone MAC team with three victories thus far in the season. 


Volleys and Points 

  • Trailing 3-1 in the opening set, Arcadia rattled off five straight points to take and early 6-3 lead in the set. 
  • With the score 10-7, Stevens scored three straight points of their own to tie the set at 10. 
  • The Ducks fell behind 17-16 late the in the set but responded by scoring four straight points highlighted by a kill as well as an ace from Lehman. 
  • The Knights did not go quietly, scoring three consecutive points to tie the match at 20. 
  • After trading points back-and-forth for the next six total points, Stevens was able to grab the final two points of the set thanks to an Arcadia error as well as a double block from Lehman and Stedman Van Arsdale and won 25-23. 
  • Much like in the first set, the Knights went on an early run, this time 6-0, to take a 7-3 lead in the set. 
  • Trailing 11-7, the Ducks scored six of the next eight points in the set to tie things at 13. 
  • Stevens fell behind again at 20-19, but did not let the set slip away as they scored six consecutive points to close the match featuring two kills by Bittker, one kills each from Lehman and Byrne and a double block by Frenzel and Burden to win the set 25-20. 
  • Arcadia jumped ahead early in the third, scoring seven of the first 10 points of the set for the third consecutive set to take a four-point lead. 
  • Holding an 8-5 edge, the Knights were then able to score five straight points to extend the lead to 13-5. 
  • The Ducks were able to climb back into the contest with a 7-2 run late to cut the deficit to 22-19, but Arcadia put down the final three points of the set to hand Stevens its first set loss in MAC play this season. 
  • The two teams traded points to start the majority of the fourth and final set as neither team led by more than three points at the halfway point in the set. 
  • Leading 15-13, the Ducks were able to go on a 4-0 run featuring a pair of kills by Lehman to extend the lead to six. 
  • After Arcadia made the score 20-15 thanks to a Stevens service error, the Ducks were able to score five of the final six points of the set highlighted by two kills from Byrne, Lehman's second service ace and another kill by Frenzel to win 3-1. 

Match Point 

  • Much as he did throughout the contest, Frenzel was able to rise up and hit a shot cross court that found the court to seal the win for the Ducks. 

Inside the Numbers 

  • Michael Snajder finished with 11 digs to produce double-digit digs for the second time in his last three contests. 
  • In the opening set, Stevens hit .333 while holding Arcadia to a .143 attack percentage. 
  • The Knights flipped the script it the third set, outhitting the Ducks .565 to .103. 
  • Stevens held a narrow 7-6 advantage in blocks as well as a 52-42 edge in total assists. 
  • The Ducks finished the match with a 62.4 side-out percentage while Arcadia sided out 55.9 percent of the time. 
  • The first set was the closest of the four with 12 total ties as well as four lead changes. 
  • Arcadia finished with six service aces to mark the most times the Ducks have been aced this season. 
  • The Knights also committed seven block errors in the contest which is also the most against Stevens this season. 
  • Austin Braas, who came into the contest leading the MAC with a .458 attack percentage, was held to a season-low .278 attack percentage in the loss. 
Unsung Hero 
  • As usual, Snajder was solid on the defensive side of the ball, finishing with double-digit digs for the third time in his career and finishing just two shy of a career-high. 

Next Up 

  • The schedule does not lighten for the Ducks as they travel to New Paltz, N.Y. to face off against SUNY-New Paltz Friday at 7:00 p.m. 
  • Stevens has a 23-12 all-time record against the Hawks as New Paltz, the reigning NCAA DIII National Champions, was able to grab a 3-1 win the last time the two teams played on April 14, 2019.
