FREDERICKSBURG, VA. (February 21, 2020) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team opened the spring portion of the 2019-20 season against a formidable opponent in nationally ranked Sewanee: University of the South (No. 22). Stevens battled but came up short against Sewanee by a score of 7-2 on Friday evening at the UMW Indoor Tennis Center. The Ducks drop to 0-1 on the year while the Tigers improve to 3-0.
Sewanee jumped out to an early 2-0 lead by taking the third and first doubles flights but the Ducks would get on the board thanks to junior Keegan Morris and freshman Philip Szkudlarski. The duo denied Sewanee of the doubles sweep by taking the No. 2 doubles flight 8-6 over Matt Barnett and Andrea Carro.
Stevens had a little momentum on their side and were set on trying to mount a comeback. The Ducks competed well in each opening set against Sewanee but could not find a way to take the lead in five of the six singles flights. Junior Arjun Krishnan put together an impressive performance in the fifth singles flight to get the final point on the board for Stevens. Krishnan got past Liam Baer in two sets 6-1, 6-3 to keep the Ducks in the match. Keegan Morris was close to recording the second singles win of the evening for Stevens but fell in three sets 1-6, 7-6, 1-5 to Andrea Carro in the No. 2 singles flight. Sewanee would take the other four singles flights in straight sets to wrap up play for the evening.
Up Next: Stevens will take on No. 25 Johns Hopkins on day two of the Mary Washington Invitational at 3:00 PM.
