No. 19 Men’s Lacrosse Falls at No. 18 Dickinson in Overtime

Gebhardt and Ipeker each post a hat trick, but 19th-ranked Ducks fall in overtime

CARLISLE, Pa. (February 22, 2020)  – Sophomore Michael Burns scored with 21 seconds left in regulation, but Ben Levin scored with just under two minutes left in overtime to send No. 18 Dickinson College men's lacrosse over No. 19 Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse Saturday in a non-conference game played at Biddle Field.

Junior Ryan Gebhardt finished with three goals and three assists and classmate Nico Ipeker matched a career-high with six goals, while handing out one assist, for the Ducks, who fell to 1-1. Gebhardt's three-goal outing marked the 24th career hat trick for the high-scoring attackman.

Nick Goles scored four times and Levin finished with three for the Red Devils, who improved to 2-0. It is believed to be the first meeting between the teams in the 2000's.

"Tough game," said head coach Gene Peluso. "We will use it to get better. We need to put together a full game."

With the Ducks trailing by one late in the fourth quarter, Goles fired a shot towards the goal that caromed off the left post. Senior Bubba Brennan tracked down the loose ball for Stevens and fed graduate student Daniel Crotty for the successful clear. Once in the Red Devils' zone, Peluso called timeout with 44 seconds on the clock to set the stage for the key possession.

After the timeout, the Ducks worked the ball around the Dickinson defense. An entry pass from junior Shawn Coulter found Burns near the inside post in a high-percentage scoring area. Burns quickly fired a shot that beat Cole Pellicano for the game-tying goal. The Charlotte, North Carolina native has found the back of the net in each of the Ducks' games this season.

In the extra period, senior Connor Murphy won the opening faceoff, but was stripped by Sam Campbell, returning possession to the home team. The Red Devils took a timeout in the offensive zone to set up a play. Once play resumed, Dickinson fired off four shots, with Levin breaking through on the final try. Freshman Connor Green, making his collegiate debut, saved Goles' first attempt and Dickinson's attackman's second attempt sailed high. A third shot rang off the post and was recovered by the Red Devils to extend the possession.

Skyler Schluter was credited with a ground ball after an errant pass was recovered in the open field. Schluter drifted back in the offensive zone before finding Levin just outside the cage for the game-winning goal.

Senior Jack Braswell drew the start and made two saves, while picking up three ground balls. Green relieved Braswell at the start of the third quarter and made five saves before suffering the loss. Pellicano made 18 saves for Dickinson to earn his second win.

Senior Brendan Monteleone joined Coulter in finding the back of the net for Stevens as nine different players collected at least one point. Burns finished with a goal and an assist and junior Will Reed had a pair of assists for his first points since May 2, 2018. Sophomore Craig Stockfeder and juniors Tim Spears and Ryan Caplis each had one assist to round out Stevens' scoring.

Dickinson jumped out to an early two-goal lead with Goles and Levin scoring in the game's first five minutes. Ipeker took advantage of Levin's one-minute unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to score his first power-play goal of the day to put Stevens on the board. The Red Devils followed with a pair of goals before Gebhardt beat the first-quarter buzzer to pull Stevens within 4-2.

An illegal equipment penalty led to Ipeker's second man-advantage goal of the day, however, Goles and Timmy Carson scored 70 seconds apart to send the teams into the intermission with the Ducks trailing by three.

Stevens rallied in the third quarter with Monteleone and Ipeker sparking the offense with a pair of goals 55 seconds apart. Gebhardt scored twice in a 27-second span to complete the comeback and provide the Ducks with their first lead of the day. Ryan Schaffer and Campbell each found the back of the net for Dickinson and Ipeker and Goles exchanged goals in the final minute of the quarter to send the teams into the final period with the Ducks trailing by one.

Ipeker, who had five hat tricks one season ago, registered his fifth and sixth goals of the day to put Stevens back in front midway through the fourth, Dickinson responded with a pair of goals, before Coulter netted his fourth of the year to again even the score. Goles put Dickinson back in front with 2:15 left in the contest before Burns' marker sent the teams into overtime.

Stevens outshot Dickinson, 46-33, on the afternoon, including a 30-20 margin in shots on goal. Ipeker led all players with 13 shots, including 10 on-goal. Gebhardt finished with 11 as 13 different players fired off at least one attempt. Goles topped Dickinson with 11. Over the Ducks' first two contests, Stevens has totaled 90 shots.

Defensively, Crotty and senior Alec Caseiro each caused two turnovers, and Brennan and freshman Jake Wright caused one each, as the Ducks forced 17 Dickinson turnovers on the day.
Matt Donnelly and Cambell each caused two turnovers for Dickinson, who turned Stevens over 12 times.

Murphy won a career-high 22 faceoffs, leading to a career-best 15 ground balls, as the Ducks were victorious in 22 of the game's 29 faceoffs. Over the team's first two games, Stevens is 35-9 (79.5%) in the 'X'. Will Smith won five faceoffs for Dickinson and Campbell won twice.

As a team, the Ducks outearned Dickinson in ground balls, 38-24. Brennan, Coulter and junior Jason Coyle each added four as 12 different players picked up at least one. Teddy Macfarlane led Dickinson with four.

The Ducks went 2 for 4 on their extra-man opportunities, with Ipeker accounting for both power-play goals. Stevens successfully killed off both of their penalties.

Stevens was successful on 21 of its 25 clearing attempts, while Dickinson converted 20 of its 27 clears.

Senior Jake Southren and sophomore Evan Eggleston each made their season debut.

Up Next: No. 19 men's lacrosse welcomes Haverford College to the DeBaun Athletic Complex on Feb. 26. The Ducks have won each of the last four meetings between the programs.
