No. 31 Men's Tennis wraps up play at the Mary Washington Invitational

Stevens took on No. 15 University of Mary Washington in their third ranked dual match of the weekend.

FREDERICKSBURG, VA. (February 23, 2020) – Junior Keegan Morris registered two wins for the No. 31 Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team in the final round of the Mary Washington Invitational. Stevens faced No. 15 University of Mary Washington in their final match of the weekend, the third consecutive ranked match-up to kick off the spring schedule. The Ducks competed well but were outlasted by Mary Washington 7-2 Sunday afternoon at the UMW Indoor Tennis Center.

Keegan Morris partnered with freshman Philip Szkudlarski secured the only doubles win for Stevens. The duo evened the team score at 1-1 after winning a thrilling doubles flight over Joe Brown and Cole Tecce 8-7. Morris then followed that doubles victory up with an incredible three set win over Joe Brown 7-5, 6-7, 12-10 in the second singles flight.

"Keegan showed his match toughness and composure this weekend with two big singles wins at the top of our lineup," stated Head Coach Steve Gachko. "His fitness level is playing a big role in his improved confidence on the court and I'm excited to see him build upon his success from this weekend."

Junior Gabriel Sifuentes and sophomore Eloi Pradier were close to giving the Ducks a 2-1 lead heading into singles competition. Sifuentes and Pradier would end up losing a competitive doubles flight to Pryian DeSilva and Andrew Watson 8-7. Mary Washington was able to widen the gap in singles and kept Stevens from mounting any type of comeback. The Eagles were able to take the other five singles flights in straight sets to secure the dual match win. Stevens dropped to 0-3 on the season but gained valuable match experience against some of the nation's best.

"Overall, I'm very proud of each and every one of our guys this weekend. We put ourselves in a position to win most of our matches and competed well with the top teams in the country," remarked Head Coach Steve Gachko. "While the box score shows us going 0-3 in dual matches, the progress we made from last season is absolutely clear and it's a win for our program at this stage in our season."

Up Next: Stevens will take on Haverford College in a non-conference showdown on February 29. This dual match will be the Ducks home opener and is slated to start at 12:00 PM.
