No. 4 Men’s Volleyball Falls in Five Sets Against No. 13 Endicott

Senior Lehman Produces a Double-Double with 20 Kills and a Career-High 14 Digs

BEVERLY, Mass. (February 23, 2020) – Senior David Lehman registered 20 kills and a career-high 14 digs for his fourth career double-double as the fourth-ranked men's volleyball team dropped a 3-2 contest Sunday against No. 13 Endicott College at MacDonald Gymnasium.

The Ducks fell behind 2-0 in the contest and rallied to tie the contest at two sets apiece before falling in five sets for just their second loss of the season.

Endicott topped Stevens (25-22, 25-21, 22-25, 22-25, 15-11) for the first time in the last 13 contests and earned a win over the highest-ranked team in the history of its program. The Gulls got 17 kills apiece from both Erich Roman and Gabe Felicetti in the win.

Junior Jack Bittker finished with 19 kills and hit .341 while senior Grant Burden produced 54 assists and a team-high five blocks as Stevens is now 4-1 in matches against teams ranked inside the AVCA top-15.

In the Gulls three set wins, Endicott committed just five total attack errors in 75 total attempts. Conversely, the Ducks had just eight total attack errors in the third and fourth sets they won.

After posting 10.8 assists per set in the match, Burden is now averaging 11.12 assists per set this season to lead all of NCAA Division III.

Volleys and Points
  • After trading points early in the opening set, Stevens used a 4-0 run to take a 12-9 lead.
  • The Gulls responded with a 6-2 run of their own to re-take the lead at 16-15 halfway through the set.
  • Trailing 20-19, Endicott scored six of the final eight points of the set to grab a 25-22 set win and go ahead 1-0.
  • Felicetti started the second set for the Gulls with a kill and a block as a part of a 4-0 run to open things up.
  • Holding a 6-4 lead, Endicott rattled off four straight points thanks to a pair of kills by Roman to extend the lead to six.
  • The Gulls were able to keep Stevens at arms-length as the Ducks were unable to cut the deficit under three for the remainder of the set as Endicott won 25-21 and moved ahead 2-0 in the match.
  • Stevens started the third set with three straight points featuring back-to-back blocks by Jonathan Frenzel and Burden.
  • Tied at 10, Bittker and Lehman teamed up to score eight of the next nine points as a part of a 9-5 run to take a 19-15 lead in the set.
  • Endicott tried to climb back into the contest with a 4-1 run while fending off a pair of set points to make the score 24-22.
  • Sophomore Jack Fyda ensured Stevens would force a fourth set as he put down a kill to give the Ducks a 25-22 set victory and make the score 2-1.
  • The two teams traded points back-and-forth in the fourth set with neither team leading by more than two points until the halfway mark of the set.
  • With the score tied at 16, Stevens scored three straight points to grab a late 19-16 edge.
  • After Endicott made the score 21-20 in favor of the Ducks, Stevens was able to force a fifth set by winning four of the final six points of the set to win 25-22 for the second straight set.
  • Stevens raced out to an early 5-2 lead in the fifth and final set thanks to three kills by Bittker.
  • The Gulls answered with an 8-2 run to take a 10-7 lead and force a Ducks timeout.
  • After the Ducks made the score 11-9 with a kill from Frenzel, Endicott forced a set point after a kill and two straight service aces from Bryn Lipto.
  • Stevens was able to fend off back-to-back match points, but the Gulls clinched the victory with a kill to win the set 15-11 and the match 3-2.
Match Point
  • Leading 14-11 in the final set, Roman put down his 17th kill of the match to seal the win. Roman finished the contest with a .517 attack percentage with just two attack errors.
Inside the Numbers
  • Endicott hit .324 in the match while the Ducks produced a .282 attack percentage in the match.
  • The Gulls finished the matchup with six service aces compared to two from Stevens.
  • Burden finished with 54 assists to produce at least 50 assists for the second time this season.
  • Senior Michael Snajder racked up 11 digs in the loss and has now recorded double-digit digs in two of his last three contests.
  • Frenzel was the most efficient hitter for the Ducks with a .538 attack percentage after producing eight kills on 13 total attacks.
  • Junior Ryan Byrne had seven kills and seven blocks in the contest while both Stedman van Arsdale and Fyda added three kills each.
  • Endicott had a narrow edge in blocks (10-9), assists (62-59), kills (63-61) and digs (53-46).
  • In the two set victories, the Ducks hit .365 as a team while producing a .210 attack percentage in the other three sets.
Next Up
  • The Ducks will take on their third straight ranked opponent as they face off against No. 3 New York University Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in Brooklyn, N.Y.
  • Stevens has won four of the last five meetings between the two teams including a 3-1 win on April 13, 2019. All-time, the Ducks have an 18-13 edge in the series.
