Baseball Drops 1-0 Pitchers Duel Against No. 24/35 Rowan

Brierley and Pron Combine to Allow Just One Hit in the Contest

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. (February 23, 2020) – Senior Chandler Brierley and freshman Anthony Pron combined to allow just two hits on the mound as the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team fell 1-0 against No. 24/35 Rowan University Sunday at Mercer County Community College.

Brierley (0-1) and Pron both gave up one hit apiece while combining to strike out eight over 8.0 innings. It was the fewest hits the Ducks have given up as a team since allowing just one against Utica on April 29, 2018.

The Profs scored the lone run of the game in the bottom half of the fourth without the advent of a hit Trip McCaffrey drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, moved to third on a passed ball and came home on a wild pitch.

The Ducks threatened to score in the top of the inning as Thomas Paulich led off with a single and moved to second on a groundout by Thomas Paulich. After a walk by Gannon Kenney-McGowan, Paulich was thrown out at home on a Tom James single to left.

Stevens looked to tie the contest in the top half of the ninth as Sutton Dole walked with one out and advanced to second on a balk. After a strikeout, the Profs elected to intentionally walk James to put two runners on with two away.

Nate Zuckerman was unable to bring either run home, however, as Dan Corvo registered his third strikeout of the game to earn the save and clinch the win.

Brierley worked out of trouble of his own in the first. After loading the bases on three walks, the senior punched out back-to-back hitters to end the inning and keep the contest scoreless.

It is the first 1-0 game in Stevens history since the Ducks defeated Houghton College 1-0 on April 30, 2016.

Inside the Numbers
  • Paulich and James both produced two hits apiece in the contest while Zuckerman and A.J. Falconite had one hit each.
  • Control was the only issue on the hill for Brierley as he walked nine batters in 5.0 innings on the mound.
  • Pron was stellar in his collegiate debut as he allowed only one hit and struck out two over 3.0 innings of work.
  • The Ducks were perfect in the field for the second time in three games.
  • James has now hit safely in all six games he has appeared in this season while Paulich now has a hit in five straight contests and Falconite has a four-game hitting streak.
  • Brierley has fanned 11 batters in 8.2 innings of work on the season.
  • Stevens left seven men on base in the contest while the Profs left eight men stranded.
From the Dugout (Head Coach Kristaps Aldins)
  • "The last two games have had playoff-type atmospheres. Although we came up on the wrong end of the 1-0 score today to Rowan, we played toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the country."
  • "Early season baseball to me is about learning about your team and regularly challenging yourself against good competition. After basically one week of games, we have seen so many exciting things from our team."
Next Up
  • The Ducks get another top-25 test Friday when they take on No. 16/22 University of Massachusetts-Boston at 12:00 p.m. on the road.
  • It is believed to be the first meeting between the two schools in the history of the programs.
