PHILADELPHIA (February 23, 2020) – Facing four NCAA Division I opponents, three of which were ranked inside the top-10 of the CollegeFencing360.com poll, the Stevens Institute of Technology men's fencing team was unable to pick up a victory as they went 0-5 in the Temple Invitational Sunday.
The Ducks fell to No. 4 Penn State University, No. 6 Princeton University, RV Johns Hopkins University, the University of Pennsylvania and No. 7 St. John's University on the day.
Tom Gana led the way for Stevens on the day as he finished 6-3 at epee while
Logan Rechler won four bouts at foil and
Matthew Jacobson,
Vaughn Rice and
Dylan Woodward all won four bouts as well at sabre.
Both the epee and sabre squads produced 15 total victories in the competition while the foil squad added nine wins.
Despite the losses, Stevens still finishes the 2019-20 regular season with the most victories in program history with 38 while also setting the program record with 25 consecutive wins earlier this season.
The Ducks also finish the regular season with a perfect 15-0 record against Middle Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association (MACFA) competition.
Vs. No. 4 Penn State (Loss 19-8)
- Wolfe Crouse and Gana both earned wins for the Ducks at epee as Stevens fell 7-2.
- The foil squad nearly grabbed a victory as Nick Beja and Rechler each had two wins apiece as Stevens fell 5-4.
- Rice won the only two bouts of the match for the Ducks at sabre in a 7-2 defeat.
Vs. No. 6 Princeton (Loss 19-8)
- Gana went a perfect 3-0 against the Tigers at epee as the squad dropped a 6-3 decision.
- For the first time this season, the Ducks were blanked at a weapon as the foil squad was unable to secure a victory in a 9-0 defeat.
- Jacobson won two bouts while Rice, Pablo Amezquita and Dylan Woodward won one apiece as Stevens was able to grab a 5-4 win at sabre.
Vs. Johns Hopkins (Loss 16-11)
- The Blue Jays were able to exact some revenge as they knocked off the Ducks by five after Stevens won 17-10 in the MACFA Group "B" vs. Group "C" competition on Feb. 16.
- The two MACFA squads along with New Jersey Institute of Technology are the three favorites to win the MACFA Championship next Sunday.
- Epee fell 6-3 after Crouse, Andy Faubert and Gana won one bout each.
- The foil squad bounced back from the 9-0 defeat with a narrow 5-4 victory thanks to two wins apiece from Noah Ehrlich and Rechler as well as one by Beja.
- Rice, Jacobson and Woodward all won one bout in a 6-3 defeat at sabre for the Ducks.
Vs. Penn (Loss 21-6)
- Crouse, Gana, Patrick Pan and Gabe Toltus all produced one win each at epee as Stevens dropped a close 5-4 contest.
- The foil squad was unable to grab a win as they fell 9-0.
- Pablo Amezquita and Woodward both registered a victory as the sabre squad fell 7-2.
Vs. No. 7 St. Johns (Loss 21-6)
- The epee squad got single victories from Faubert, Pan and Toltus as a part of a 6-3 defeat.
- For the second straight match, the foil squad was blanked as they fell 9-0.
- At sabre, Juan Amezquita, Jacobson and Woodward were all victors in one bout as the squad fell 6-3.

Next Up
- The Ducks return to the strips Sunday, March 1, for the MACFA Championships starting at 9:00 a.m.
- Stevens finished third overall at the MACFA Championships in 2019.
- The Ducks will be looking to win their first weapon title since grabbing both the epee and foil championships in 2014.
