HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 5, 2020) – For the third consecutive game, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team raced out to an early lead and cruised to a double-digit victory as they defeated Wilkes University 72-47 Wednesday night inside Canavan Arena.
The Ducks used a 12-1 run over four minutes of game action in the first quarter to extend the lead to 11 and never looked back as they move over .500 in MAC Freedom play at 5-4.
Four players scored in double figures for Stevens including sophomore
Jess Broad who led the way with 16 points to go along with 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double for the third time this season and the fifth time in her career.
Wilkes was led offensively by Gianna Roberts who produced 16 points and seven rebounds in the loss.
Along with Broad, juniors
Allie Moss,
Christina Li and
Emily Nunez scored 14, 11 and 10 points, respectively. The four combined to go 20 for 38 from the floor and 9 of 20 from downtown.
After falling behind 4-2 to start the game, the Ducks tied the contest less than a minute later and did not trail again. In its three-game winning streak, Stevens has trailed in just 1:04 of game action.
Stevens played stifling defense throughout the contest, holding the Colonels to 28.8 percent from the floor and 15.4 percent from 3-point range while forcing 26 turnovers.
With the game tied at six Stevens used the 12-1 run, capped off by an untraditional three-point play from
Annetta Panayides, to take an 18-7 lead with less than a minute remaining in the first.
The Colonels attempted to climb back into the contest by bridging the first and second quarters with five straight points to cut the deficit down to six.
The Ducks responded, however, by scoring the final seven points of the first half thanks to a 3-pointer from Moss, a jumper by Broad and a pair of made free-throws from
Emily Nunez to take a 37-23 lead into the locker room.
Coming out of the break, Wilkes scored the first points of the third quarter to make it a 12-point game, but did not come any closer the rest of the way as Stevens extended the lead to 21 for the first time as Li, Broad and Panayides teamed up for a 9-0 run.
Leading 58-36 to start the fourth quarter, the Ducks were able to swell the lead to 30, their largest lead of the contest, thanks to five consecutive points from sophomore
Vanessa Elliott as a part of a 10-0 run.
Wilkes was able to trim the deficit back down to 23 with a 7-0 run, but the Ducks held them scoreless for the final 2:43 of game action to clinch the victory.
Turning Point
- Wilkes was able to keep the deficit at single digits for the majority of the second quarter and made the score 30-23 with 2:16 left after Macy Berryman drilled a 3-point bucket on the fast break.
- The Ducks made sure they went into the locker room leading by double digits, however, as they outscored the Colonels 7-0 in the final 1:10 of the second quarter and led by 14 at half.
- The seven consecutive points started with a jumper in the paint for Broad thanks to an assist by Moss. The next time down the floor, Moss got into the action on the scoring side with a 3-point bucket off an assist by Li.
- In the final possession of the half, Nunez was able to drive to the hoop and draw a foul. She then calmly sank a pair of free throws to close the quarter.
Inside the Numbers
- Stevens was able to run up-and-down the court in the game, outscoring Wilkes 13-5 in fast break points.
- The Ducks outrebounded the Colonels 47-43 and have now finished with more boards than their opponents in every game during this three-game winning streak.
- Speaking of streaks, the three consecutive victories is the longest winning streak for Stevens this season.
- Ranked 16th in NCAA Division III in 3-point field goal percentage heading into the game, Stevens shot 40.0 percent from downtown and increased their season percentage to 35.9.
- Moss produced five assists and zero turnovers in the win and ranks second in the MAC Freedom in both assists per contest as well as assist-to-turnover ratio. Additionally, she now sits just 21 assists away from becoming the 11th player in program history to have 100 assists in a season.
- In just 31 minutes of game action, Moss was +30 in her time on the court while Broad was +25 in 23 minutes.
- Stevens assisted on 18 of its 28 made baskets in the victory.
Unsung Hero
- Panayides closed the contest second on the team with seven rebounds to go along with five points. She was also +18 in her 15 minutes of game action.

- "I was proud of the entire team. To have 18 assists shows we played unselfish basketball. I think we could have done better on the boards which remains a point of emphasis for us."
Next Up
- Stevens heads to Dallas, Pennsylvania to take on Misericordia University Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
- The Cougars knocked off the Ducks 77-62 in Hoboken earlier this season in the only contest between the two teams.
