HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 11, 2020) – Trailing by three runs heading into the bottom of the ninth, the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team nearly completed the comeback with a pair of runs in the inning but could not add any more as they dropped a 6-5 contest against The College at Old Westbury Wednesday at Dobbellaar Field.
Junior
Ryan Wall was fantastic off the bench for the Ducks, finishing the day 2 for 4 with a double and a career-high four RBI. Wall tied the contest with a two-out three-RBI double in the fifth and ripped an RBI single down the right field line for the Ducks fifth run in the ninth.
Senior
Michael Frissora got the start on the hill and allowed three runs on seven hits over 5.0 innings while striking out three and did not factor into the decision.
John Dell'Olio led the way for Old Westbury offensively as he went 3 for 5 with three RBI while Mike Manetta and Brandon Wilson both had multi-hit games.
The Panthers started the scoring in the top half of the third inning. After a single and a walk put a pair of runners on, Dell'Olio ripped a single up the middle to give Old Westbury an early 1-0 lead. They could not add more in the inning, however, as Frissora stranded a pair of runners on base with a groundout.
The action picked up in the fifth with the Panthers scoring two runs and the Ducks answering with three runs of their own in the bottom half.
Old Westbury was able to take the lead in the inning after four straight singles capped off by a two-RBI single by Dell'Olio to make the score 3-0.
A leadoff walk, a hit-by-pitch and another walk loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the fifth for the Ducks. After a popout and a strikeout, Wall came to the plate and ensured the inning would not be wasted when he roped a double to the right center field wall to empty the bases and tie the contest at three.
The Panthers answered with a three-run inning of their own in the top of the seventh thanks to RBI singles from Wilson and Dell'Olio as well as an RBI groundout off the bat of Peter Capel.
The score remained 6-3 in favor of Old Westbury until the bottom of the ninth.
After
Nate Zuckerman led the inning off with a walk and moved to third on a pair of groundouts, sophomore
Tom James continued his torrid start to the season, lifting a ground-rule RBI down to center field to bring home Zuckerman.
Wall then followed it up with an RBI single down the right field line to plate James and cut the deficit to one.
Stevens was unable to complete the comeback, however, as
Chris Silos struck out swinging to end the contest.

From the Dugout (Head Coach Kristaps Aldins)
- "We got the tying run to the plate in the ninth, which is what you want to do in a situation like that, down three runs. Ryan Wall gave us a spark today with his huge two-out, two-strike bases clearing double. And then again in the ninth when his liner to right kept the rally going."
Next Up
- Stevens is scheduled to return to action Saturday with a doubleheader against Rutgers-Newark on the road in Newark, N.J. starting at 11:30 a.m.
- The Ducks have already faced off against Rutgers-Newark earlier this season as the two teams split a doubleheader.
