Baseball Hands Stockton First Loss of 2020 Season

Ducks pitching staff allows just one earned run over 9.0 innings on the mound

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 4, 2020) – Senior Michael Frissora allowed just one run over 6.0 innings on the mound while sophomore Tom James and freshman Chris Davis both registered two RBI apiece to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team to a 8-1 victory over Stockton University Wednesday at Dobbelaar Field.

With the win, The Ducks (4-5) snapped a three-game losing skid and became the first team to knock off the Ospreys (5-1) this season.

Stevens' pitching staff was phenomenal throughout the day, combining to allow just one run on five hits while striking out 12.

Frissora (1-0) started things off on the hill and picked up the win after striking out six and giving up five hits and one earned over 6.0 innings of work. Freshman Anthony Pron took over in the seventh and did not allow a hit while fanning four batters in 2.0 innings and classmate Michael Anthony closed things out in his collegiate debut, striking out two and not giving up a hit in the ninth.

At the plate, the Ducks were able to get to Stockton starter Rico Viani (1-1) who had not allowed an earned run in his first 7.1 innings on the bump this season.

The Ospreys opened the scoring in the top half of the fourth. After starting the inning with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and third with nobody out, Jay Marchese grounded into a fielder's choice to bring home the first run of the game. Frissora limited the damage, however, getting a pair of strikeouts with a runner on base to end the inning.

Stevens responded immediately with a run of its own in the bottom half. After Chris Silos and David both drew walks to give the Ducks two runners on with two away, sophomore Ryan Finegan came through with a clutch two-out RBI single into right to tie the score at 1-1.

The fifth inning proved to be the deciding one, as Stevens got out of trouble in the top half and was able to put up five runs of its own in the bottom of the frame.

Stockton leadoff man Marco Meleo nearly put the Ospreys back in front in the fifth as he lifted a 2-2 pitch down the right field line for a triple with one away. Frissora did not waiver, however, as he got back-to-back shallow fly outs to end the inning and keep the score tied.

Thomas Paulich led the fifth inning off for the Ducks with a walk and subsequently moved to second on a single by James. After Sutton Dole walked to load the bases, Silos was hit by a 1-2 pitch and earned an RBI to give Stevens its first lead of the contest.

The runs did not stop there as Davis followed his teammate's lead and also was hit by a pitch with the bases juiced to make the score 3-1.

With the bases loaded and one away, Finegan grounded the ball to the first baseman who attempted to come home and throw out the lead runner. The attempt was unsuccessful, however, as catcher Brandan Gomez was unable to handle the throw that went to the backstop and allowed Silos and Dole both to come around to touch home plate.

The Ducks added to their lead in the seventh when Silos laced a single up the middle to leadoff the inning and moved to second on a groundout by Patrick Rood. One batter later,
Davis, who was still looking for his first collegiate hit, delivered in a big way as he roped a 2-1 pitch into the gap in left center for a triple to easily score Silos.

Stevens tacked on two more in the eighth after James deposited a single into the right center field gap to score both A.J. Falconite and Paulich and make the score 8-1.

Anthony then closed the door in the ninth as he caught Ryan O'Sullivan looking to clinch the win for the Ducks.
