SALISBURY, MD. (March 7, 2020) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team traveled south to take on Salisbury University in another tough non-conference dual match. Stevens put themselves in position to secure their first win of the season but Salisbury proved to be too much. The Seagulls would take the match 6-3 and improve their record to 6-1, the Ducks fall to 0-5.
"Our guys continued to compete until the last point but we didn't get the doubles lead that we needed heading into singles," stated Head Coach
Steve Gachko. "I was particularly proud of Keegan who was one game away from pulling out a huge win in the third set over one of the top players in the country."
Alec Angradi and Ian Slew would get Salisbury on the board first, they defeated sophomore
Marc Feliu and junior
Keegan Morris 8-5 in the No. 1 doubles flight. Stevens responded with a doubles win of their own at second doubles thanks to junior
Keegan Morris and freshman
Philip Szkudlarski. The No. 2 duo defeated Ryan Santmyer and Brad Pappalardo 8-6 bringing the team score to 1-1. Salisbury would take the third doubles flight and the 2-1 lead heading into singles competition.
Three singles flights went the distance and Salisbury was able to take each one which proved to be the difference in the match.
Keegan Morris stepped up to first singles today and was in a competitive match against highly-touted Alec Angradi. Morris would come up just short to Angradi, 2-6, 7-5, 5-7, but continues to show he is right there against some of the best players in the country. Junior
Mark Kanevsky got out to a strong start against Ryan Santmyer but would drop the fourth singles flight in three-sets. Junior
Arjun Krishnan showed a lot of heart in his singles flight against Brad Pappalardo. Krishnan was slightly edged in the third set 15-13 which proved to be difference in the match-up with Pappalardo. Sophomore
Marc Feliu posted a comeback three set win at No. 2 singles, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5, over Ian Siew. Junior
Gabriel Sifuentes continues to impress in singles play, he posted a convincing 6-2, 6-2 win over Stefan Hein to close out the match.
"
Marc Feliu fought off a ton of match points in his impressive win after being down 5-0 in the third set. Gabe looked great today in singles - he was the one dictating most points and played with a lot of confidence out there," said Coach Gachko. "We will continue to work on improving our doubles play next week in preparation for NYU and TCNJ next weekend."
Up Next: Stevens will take on two nationally ranked opponents next weekend, first up is No. 35 New York University on March 14 at 12:45 PM. The Ducks will then take on No. 40 The College of New Jersey on March 15 at 11:00 AM.
