Salisbury, MD. (March 7, 2020) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team started the spring portion of the 2019-20 season against Salisbury University. Stevens could not overcome an early deficit and fell 8-1 to Salisbury in their spring opener. The Ducks drop to 0-1 on the year while the Seagulls improve to 5-1. Senior Nicole Badalyan and sophomore Alexis Fuda doubles win was the highlight of the match for the stevens. The No. 3 duo posted a solid 8-6 victory over Laura Brown and Katherine Tamesis for the Ducks one team point on the day.
"Overall I thought that the team's energy was great both on and off the court. We tried some new doubles combinations which brought a different but fun dynamic," Nicole Badalyan expressed. "Although the score isn't what we wanted, we can use this as a foundation moving forward. It was really great to see all the Ducks playing so well and giving it their all."
Salisbury took out to a 2-1 lead into the singles competition and continued to control the match. Freshman Audrey Heaberlin showed a lot of promise in her singles flight against Veronica Cuellar. Heaberlin dropped the first set but bounced back nicely by taking the second set 6-1 to force a winner take all third set. Heaberlin could not complete the comeback and fell in the third set 10-5 but the freshmen continues to show she will be a big piece in the Ducks line-up in 2020. The Seagulls would conclude the match by taking the rest of the singles flights in straight sets.
"Today was a good day for us versus a strong Salisbury team. We put out three new doubles pairs and competed well in all spots, highlighted by Alexis and Nicole winning 8-6 at the 3rd doubles," said Interim Head Coach Arik Zeevy. "We're looking forward to another tough out of the conference match next weekend and then shifting our focus to conference play."
