HOBOKEN, N.J. (Sept. 21, 2020) – Under the leadership of current Director of Athletics Russell Rogers, who just completed his 20th year in the position, the Stevens Institute of Technology Department of Athletics has risen to unprecedented levels of success.

Under Rogers' leadership, Stevens has finished inside the top 45 in the DIII College Directors' Cup standings 11 consecutive years including a program-best 13th-place finish in both 2010-11 and 2015-16. The Ducks also won the Jostens Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Institution of the Year Award in both 2007-08 and 2012-13, while also finishing as the Collegiate Athletic Administrators of New Jersey DIII Cup Winner in seven of the last 10 years.

The Department of Athletics will look back into the archives to reflect on the development's evolution under Rogers. Each week, key moments will be highlighted that happened "This Week in Stevens History."

The week of September 21-27
Sept. 21, 2011 – Men's Soccer Shuts Out No. 10 Swarthmore 1-0
First-year goalkeeper Brian Schaake earned his first collegiate shutout in style as he helped the men's soccer team earn a thrilling 1-0 victory over No. 10 and previously undefeated Swarthmore.

In the 24th minute of the contest, first-year student-athlete Jonathan Stallone set up sophomore Stephen Dunbar with the only goal of the match to send Stevens to its fourth straight win. Schaake totaled five saves in the contest, including a leaping punch save in the final minute to preserve the win for the Ducks.

Sept. 21, 2008 – Women's Soccer Tops St. John Fisher to Extend its Home Unbeaten Streak to 44 Matches
Senior Erin Brennan broke a scoreless tie in the 72nd minute and Erica Risch added a pair of goals in the final 12 minutes to help the women's soccer team extend its home unbeaten streak to 44 consecutive matches. At the time, the 44 consecutive matches without being topped was the nation's longest home unbeaten streak. The streak snapped six days later when the Ducks fell to Ithaca at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

The streak, which remains the longest home unbeaten streak in program history, began on October 24, 2004 and lasted for over three consecutive seasons. Historically, the women's soccer team has been nearly unbeatable at DeBaun, especially in the postseason. Under head coach Jeff Parker, the Ducks own a 32-1-2 record at home in the postseason.

Sept. 22, 2014 – Men's Tennis Wins Both Singles and Doubles ITA Regional Titles
The Stevens men's tennis team swept both the singles and doubles titles at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Regional Championship. Junior Matthew Heinrich captured the singles crown and followed it up by teaming up with junior Ben Foran to win the title in doubles. Both championships were program firsts for the Ducks.

Heinrich won his singles semifinal matchup 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 and followed it up but taking home a straight set 6-2, 6-3 win in the championship match to grab the crown. After a short rest, Heinrich return to the court with Foran and toppled Skidmore College in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) to cap a historic day in program history for the Stevens.

Sept. 23, 2012 – Jessica Bourque and Lisa Tessitore upset No. 1 Skidmore en route to the ITA Semifinals
One year prior to breaking the program doubles record, women's tennis student-athletes Jessica Bourque and Lisa Tessitore teamed up to pull off a shocking upset of the top-ranked doubles pair in the tournament to earn a trip to the ITA Regional Semifinals.

Borque and Tessitore, who were seeded eighth in the bracket, started the day with an easy 8-1 win over Ithaca College and followed it up with an 8-2 second-round victory over the Sage Colleges. The duo then turned their attention to the quarterfinals where they faced top-ranked Skidmore and did not blink, upsetting the tournament favorites 8-1.

Sept. 25, 2013 – Marguerite Chavez Nearly Breaks Program Record with Four Goals in a 7-3 Win Over Cabrini
Senior forward Marguerite Chavez scored four goals, finishing just one shy of the program record of five, to lead the field hockey team to a 7-3 win over Cabrini College. Chavez scored the first, third, fourth and fifth goals of the contest for the Ducks. Kara Borzillo set the program record with five goals in a 7-0 win over Elmira on Oct. 13, 2007.

Chavez is still the only student-athlete in program history to net at least four goals multiple times in her career as she also netted four goals Sept. 8, 2012 in a 6-2 victory over Houghton College. Chavez remains tied for second all-time in career goals with 53.

Sept. 25, 2011 – Maggie Kowalska Becomes Fourth Student-Athlete in Program History to Eclipse 1,000 Kills
In a 3-1 Empire 8 victory over Hartwick, women's volleyball student-athlete Maggie Kowalska became just the fourth player in program history to record over 1,000 career kills and was the fastest player in program history to reach the milestone. The Ducks topped the Hawks 25-19, 18-25, 25-17, 25-14 and Kowalska led the way with 19 kills on the day.

Kowalska was not done breaking records at Stevens, however, as she went on to post 1,734 career kills. She remains the program's all-time leader in career kills as well as single-season kills with 505 in her senior campaign.

Sept. 27, 2003 – MSOC Josh Ottinger Sets Career Scoring Mark as Men's Soccer Rolls Past Farmingdale, 9-0
In a 9-0 rout of Farmingdale State, Josh Ottinger became the all-time points leader for the men's soccer program, despite being only a junior at the time. Ottinger netted a pair of goals and also added an assist to bring his career point total to 96 and surpass the mark of 92 set my Yankuba Njie from 1992-95.

Ottinger continued his dominance of the record books throughout his career as he still holds the career record with 174 career points, 39 more than Terrence Johnson who currently sits in second place. Ottinger also is the men's soccer career leader in goals with 68 in his time on Castle Point.
