HOBOKEN, N.J. (Sept. 28, 2020) – Under the leadership of current Director of Athletics
Russell Rogers, who just completed his 20th year in the position, the Stevens Institute of Technology Department of Athletics has risen to unprecedented levels of success.
Under Rogers' leadership, Stevens has finished inside the top 45 in the DIII College Directors' Cup standings 11 consecutive years including a program-best 13th-place finish in both 2010-11 and 2015-16. The Ducks also won the Jostens Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Institution of the Year Award in both 2007-08 and 2012-13, while also finishing as the Collegiate Athletic Administrators of New Jersey DIII Cup Winner in seven of the last 10 years.
The Department of Athletics will look back into the archives to reflect on the development's evolution under Rogers. Each week, key moments will be highlighted that happened "This Week in Stevens History."
The week of September 28-October 4
Sept. 28, 2019 – Fiona Matthews Scores Game-Winner in Double OT to Lift Women's Soccer to 1-0 Victory Over Previously Unbeaten No. 13 Arcadia
In the 108th minute of a scoreless contest against previously unbeaten No. 13 Arcadia, sophomore
Fiona Matthews found the back of the net off of a beautiful double assist from teammates
Ally Wanzor and
Gabby Saade to lift the Stevens women's soccer team to a thrilling 1-0 victory.
The win over the Knights kick-started the Ducks stellar 2019 season as Stevens swept through MAC Freedom play with a perfect 7-0-0 record en route to winning their first-ever MAC Freedom Tournament Title and advancing to the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015. The victory was also the third in a series of 15 consecutive victories, the longest win streak in program history.
Sept. 28, 2018 – Women's Fencing and Men's Volleyball Named 2017-18 President's Cup Winners
After stellar seasons in the 2017-18 academic year, the Stevens women's fencing and men's volleyball programs were named the co-winners of the President's Cup, which is presented annually to the varsity program that best exemplifies both academic and athletic success, combined with a strong sense of sportsmanship, and dedicated service to the community.
In the 2017-18 season the women's fencing completed one of the the most successful regular seasons in program history, compiling a 32-3 record. Led by 2018 alumna
Abby Kaye, the lone Stevens fencer in program history to compile 300 victories in a career, Stevens was the top Division III program at the 90th annual National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association Championships and took home first place in the Eastern Women's Fencing Conference. Amanda Choy both repeated as EWFC Fencer of the Year in their respective weapons.
Men's volleyball, meanwhile, finished 27-5 and reached the national championship match for the second time in four seasons and advanced to the final four for the fourth consecutive season. The team led all Division III programs with five American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Americans, with four landing on the First Team. Men's Volleyball won its second United Volleyball Conference championship and was ranked in the top three of the AVCA Poll for the entire season. The Ducks were 27-3 against DIII competition and their only losses came against teams ranked inside the AVCA top-10.
Sept. 29, 2019 – Women's Tennis Wins Four Titles at Individual MAC Championships
Competing in the Middle Atlantic Conference for the first time in program history, the Stevens women's tennis team won four conference titles at the 2019 MAC Individual Championships as first-year
Audrey Heaberlin won on line two singles and the Ducks took home three of the four gold medals in doubles play.

Makenna Sargis topped the field at third doubles and junior Gabreilla Tantillo and freshman
Juliette Marchisio earned a first-place finish at No. 4 doubles.
In addition to the four gold medals, the Ducks also took home six second-place finishes and were represented in the finals in 10 of the 11 total singles and doubles flights in the competition.
Sept. 29, 2008 – Stevens Presented with the 2007-08 ECAC Institution of the Year Award
The Stevens Athletics Department was recognized presented with the 2008 ECAC Jostens Institution of Year of the Year award for the first time in the history of the institution after a stellar performance on the field and in the classroom in the 2007-08 academic year. The award is given annually to the member institution that best exemplifies the highest standards of collegiate academic and athletic performance.
During the 2007-08 school year, a total of nine different Stevens teams advanced to NCAA national or regional tournaments - men's cross country, men's fencing, men's soccer, men's swimming, men's tennis, wrestling, women's cross country, women's fencing, and women's volleyball. For the second year in a row, the women's volleyball team was New York Regional champions of the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the national quarterfinals. The Ducks finished with an overall record of 36-5 and a national ranking of No. 19 by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. The men's soccer team reached the NCAA Tournament for the fifth-consecutive year, while the men's tennis team made its second-straight appearance.
Stevens sent three individuals to the NCAA national tournament in their respective sports as well. Brandon MacWhinnie became the first All-American in Stevens' wrestling history when he placed third in the country in the 174-lb. weight class. Lowden Charles reached the finals of the NCAA men's fencing championship, which marks the first-ever foilist to do so through 64 years at Stevens. Evan Wilson also became the first All-American for the men's swimming program as he finished 21st at the NCAA Championships in the 1,650-yard freestyle as a first-year.
Academically, Stevens produced eight CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honorees in six different sports. Three student-athletes were named CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans: women's soccer player Sara Roeder, and Michael Hoffman and John Hoffman of the men's cross country team. Roeder and Michael Hoffman were both first team selections and Roeder was part of the women's soccer team that won an NSCAA Academic Team Award for the fourth straight season.
Sept. 30, 2008 – Field Hockey Ranked in NFHCA Poll for First Time in Program History
After just four seasons as a full varsity sport on Castle Point, the Stevens field hockey program entered the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Top-20 for the first time in program history in 2008. The Ducks were ranked 20th in the poll thanks to a perfect 9-0 start that featured a victory over No. 14 Juniata for the second consecutive season.
Stevens finished the season with a program-best 19 victories and won the Empire 8 Tournament title to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. The nine straight victories to start the season is also still a program record. The Ducks climbed as high as No. 14 in the poll in 2008 and finished the season as the No. 16 team in the nation.
Oct. 3, 2015 – Syndi Horner Becomes Fastest Player in Program History to Reach 1,000 Career Digs
As a sign of what was to come for her illustrious career, Stevens women's volleyball student-athlete Syndi Horner became the fastest player in program history to reach 1,000 career digs as she accomplished the feat in a 3-0 sweep of Western Connecticut State.
Horner got to 1,000 in just 57 matches across 198 total sets. In 2019, sophomore
Elizabeth Chu nearly bested Horner's performance as she also reached 1,000 career digs in 57 matches, but did so in 208 total sets played, leaving Horner as the fastest player to reach the milestone.
Horner did not stop there, however, as she went on to rack up 2,605 total digs in her career to sit atop the program's all-time leaderboard with over 500 more than Rachel Ostroff who sits in second with 2,101. In her career, Horner also tallied a program-best 5.25 digs per set and is still the only Stevens women's volleyball player to be named conference Libero of the Year three times in a career.
Oct. 4, 2014 – Amy Regan Tops Field of 360 Runners at Paul Short Run
Eventual two-time National Champion
Amy Regan collected another medal in her illustrious career as she crossed the finish line in first place ahead of 359 other competitors across NCAA Divisions I, II and III to win the Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University.
Regan posted a final time of 20:42 and beat the next closest competitor by nearly one minute on the 6K Brown course. Of the top 10 runners, Regan was the only DIII student-athlete, and the next closest DIII runner placed 12th in 21:59.
