Field Hockey Dismantles DelVal to Clinch Spot in MAC Freedom Tournament

Head Coach Meredith Spencer-Blaetz earns 50th career victory

HOBOKEN, N.J. (Oct. 21, 2021) – For the 11th consecutive game and the 50th time overall in the career of Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey head coach Meredith Spencer-Blaetz, Stevens picked up a victory as they raced past Delaware Valley with a 9-0 victory Wednesday at the DeBaun Athletic Center.

The win was the most lopsided of the season for the Ducks as seven different student-athletes scored and nine different individuals registered a point to improve their overall record to 12-2 and remain perfect (5-0) in MAC Freedom play this season.

Stevens got two goals apiece from junior Lynda Farinella and senior Aryana Muscara in the victory. Farinella also added a pair of assists to lead the team with six points on the night as she has now produced at least one point in eight consecutive games and has scored in four straight.

The Ducks' 11-game winning streak remains the longest in program history, now two better than the nine-game streak in 2008 when Stevens won the Empire 8 Conference Title and advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.

Defensively, Stevens did not allow a shot in the game and controlled the tempo throughout. It is the first time the Ducks have held their opponent without an attempt at goal since a 3-0 shutout of Sage on Oct. 27, 2018.

Farinella got Stevens on the board in the fifth minute of game action as Brynn Froehlich took a shot from just inside the circle that Farinella was able to redirect into the left side of the cage to make the score 1-0.

The goal proved to be the game-winner to give Farinella the game-winning goal in three consecutive contests.

The duo of Froehlich and Farinella switched places on the next score for the Ducks less than a minute later. This time it was Farinella who passed the ball into the middle of the circle for Froehlich to tip past the goalkeeper.

The score remained 2-0 until the eighth minute of game action when Farinella did it herself for her second goal of the game.

The South Plainfield, N.J., native was able to steal a pass, maneuver past a defender and fire a shot into the cage to extend the lead to three.

Needing one more goal to set a new season-high for scores in a quarter, the Ducks did just that as Danielle Hessels was able to weave through the defense 12:31 into the game and rip a slapshot across the face of the cage and into the bottom left corner.

The goal was the second of Hessels' young collegiate career and she would later be joined by her sister in the scoring category.

Stevens maintained the 4-0 advantage into halftime and added to it early in the third. Less than 50 second after the break, Farinella's attempt for her first career hat trick was thwarted by a penalty by a Delaware Valley defender, but it did earn the Ducks a penalty stroke.

Senior Samantha Hessels was then able to calmly step up and bury a shot just under the outstretched arms of the goalkeeper to put Stevens on top 5-0.

The goal was the second of the career for Hessels and is the first time both Hessel sisters have score in the same day.

The lead swelled to six in the 37th minute of game action after the Ducks earned a set piece opportunity on a penalty corner.

This time Farinella decided to share the wealth with a first-year as she flicked a ball across the face of goal for Emily Smart to come in and put into the goal.

Smart is now third on the team with six goals this season including two in her last four.

With less than two minutes left in the third quarter, Stevens' leading scorer had yet to score. Muscara seemed determined to change that fact and made the score 7-0 as she took three consecutive shots in a five-second span before finally putting home her third try.

Muscara was not done there, though, adding another in the fourth quarter at the 48-minute mark to give her 13 this season and make the score 8-0.

A Freehold, N.J., native, Muscara is now first in the MAC Freedom in goals and total points with 32. She now has at least one point in nine games as a part of the current 11-game win streak.

The strong offensive night was capped off when junior Natalie Logan collected a pass just inside the circle with less than five minutes remaining from first-year Paulina Georgoutsos and tipped it home to give Stevens the most goals in a single game since racking up 13 against Albertus Magnus on Sept. 5, 2018. It was the first point of Georgoutsos' career and the second goal for Logan this season.

The Ducks cruised from there as they remain on top the MAC Freedom standings with two conference matches left to play on the year.
