EWING, N.J. (Oct. 23, 2021) – Sophomore
Heather Maclachlan earned a victory in the first individual race of the day and picked up three more runner-up finishes to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's swimming team as they fell 167-92 on the road Saturday against The College of New Jersey.
The Ducks earned at least a runner-up finish in 12 of the 16 events on the day but it was not enough as Stevens dropped to 1-2 on the young season.
Maclachlan opened the day with an impressive win in the 1000-yard freestyle and followed it up by touching in second place in the 200-yard butterfly, the 200-yard individual medley and as a member of the 400-free relay team.
In addition to Maclachlan's performance,
Kai Wong,
Sophia Patz,
Keenan Yates and
Jamielyn Juan all earned multiple runner-up finishes on the day.
How it Happened
- The Ducks started the day with the combination of Wong, Patz, Madie DeJong and Yates combining for a time of 1:55.03 to finish in second place in the 200-medley relay.
- Machlachlan's win in the 1,000-free came next as she blew away her competition, winning the event by over 11 seconds with a final time of 11:25.06.
- The 200-free saw Emily Lynch touch as Stevens' top finisher as she produced a time of 2:04.78 for third place.
- The next four races for the Ducks all saw second-place finishes, starting with Wong earning silver in the 100-back with a time of 1:02.13.
- In the 100-breast a time of 1:12.31 was good enough to earn Patz a second-place finish.
- Machlachlan returned to the pool for the 200-fly after that and finished in second after producing a time of 2:16.07.
- The string of four straight closed out with Yates swimming a time of 25.65 in the 50-free. The first year immediately returned to the pool and was the top finisher for the Ducks in the 100-free as well after touching in 58.28.
- The meet then closed with six consecutive silvers for Stevens as Patz grabbed the first with a time of 2:18.23 in the 200-back.
- Katelyn Chen swam her best race of the day next with a time of 2:40.93 in the 200-breast to take second.
- Olivia Shusta was the top Duck finisher in the 500-free as she swam a time of 5:39.36 for second place.
- Stevens went 2-3 in the next two races of the day as Juan and Julia Munger finished in times of 1:02.37 and 1:05.24, respectively, in the 100-fly.
- It was Maclachlan and Patz who gave the Ducks their next 2-3 finish as Maclachlan took silver in 2:19.57 and Patz earned bronze in 2:20.43.
- The meet wrapped up with Lynch, Gillian Reinhardt, Juan and Maclachlan combining for a time of 3:54.47 to finish runner-up in the 400-free relay.
Next Up
- Stevens returns to the pool when compete for the first time at home on Nov. 5th in a dual against Drew University at 5:00 p.m.
- The Ducks have earned wins over the Rangers each of the last three times the teams have faced off, including a 114-91 win on Oct. 11, 2018, the last time the two teams met.
