Women’s Soccer Rallies to Defeat DeSales 2-1 on Rehrig’s Double OT Winner

Ducks win second straight with double overtime victory

HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 2, 2021)  – Sophomore Amelia Rehrig scored in the 105th minute to power the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 double overtime victory over DeSales University Saturday in a MAC Freedom match at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

The winning play began just shy of the midfield line. Senior Brynn Budka made a move around a DeSales defender and passed to graduate student Kaitlyn Casiano to switch the field. Casiano pushed the ball forward to senior Ally Wanzor, who managed to keep possession inbounds before firing off a pass up the far sideline to sophomore Jana Mucci. Mucci made a long run parallel to the touch line before entering the 18 through the left side. Mucci then moved towards the six before touching the ball over the Rehrig, who moved through space unmarked. Rehrig drew a pair of defenders before sending a right-footed shot over the outstretched left arm of DeSales' Hannah Pacheco and into the top-right corner of the goal, setting off a celebration inside the 18.

Rehrig's dramatic game-winner capped a wild comeback for the Ducks, who forced overtime in the 83rd minute, courtesy of a header from senior Taylor Whitlock. Sophomore Gab Aloe delivered a perfectly-placed ball to the back post, where Whitlock was able to maneuver into a dangerous position for her first goal since Nov. 2, 2019.

Senior Izzy DiDario matched a season-high with eight saves for the Ducks, who won their second straight to improve to 3-4-2 on the season and to 1-0 in league play. Stevens has won 20 straight regular season conference matches. Pachecho finished with six saves for DeSales, who fell to 7-3 on the year and to 0-1 in MAC Freedom play. The Bulldogs have dropped three straight. Stevens has won its last 10 conference openers.

Whitlock and Rehrig's heroics were needed after the Bulldogs' Allie Trick took advantage of a defensive zone turnover to net her sixth goal of the year in the seventh minute.

Turning Point
  • With time winding down in the first overtime period, DiDario ranged high in the air to make her final save of the night, punching Megan Corbran's try over the goal in the 99th minute.

Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens held a 19-17 advantage in shots. Each side fired off four attempts in overtime. The Ducks have outshot eight of their nine opponents this season. Of the Ducks' 19 attempts, eight were on target, while nine of the Bulldogs' 17 were on frame.
  • Rehrig fired off five shots to lead both sides, while Holly McFarland took four shots to pace DeSales.
  • DeSales earned seven corners, while the Ducks earned one.
  • Rehrig has totaled three goals over her last two matches to move into a tie for 12th place in the MAC Freedom.
  • Besides the two goalkeepers, four student-athletes played all 104 minutes: DeSales' Tori Harnett, Cassidy Klein and Lindsay Pijuan, and the Ducks' Gianni Nitti.
  • Stevens improved to 4-2 all-time against the Bulldogs.
  • The victory moved head coach Jeff Parker to 298 career victories and 288 wins at Stevens.

From the Pitch - Sophomore Amelia Rehrig
  • "The goal in double overtime was a combination of outstanding team effort and bringing concepts from practice onto the game field. It started with an excellent ball to switch the field and change langes from Brynn Budka and amazing hustle from Ally Wanzor to keep the ball in play and send Jana Mucci down the sideline. Jana's ability to turn the corner, a concept we practiced just this week, and to serve a well-placed ball on the ground made my job of tapping the ball into the net simple and amazing!"

From the Sidelines - Head Coach Jeff Parker
  • "We're doing our part to keep things interesting in 2021! Tough to chase the game after giving up the opening goal. The pace was so frenetic and had so much going on with hyped reactions to everything and everyone, on and off the field, all night. I am proud that we were able to take a deep breath and find our balance at the end of the match. A good lesson, to be a thermostat and not a thermometer."
