HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 30, 2021) – Junior
Bruno Andino converted a penalty in the 87th minute to cap a wild afternoon as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team defeated Lycoming College 2-1 Saturday in a MAC Freedom match at the DeBaun Athletic Complex. With the victory, the Ducks secured a berth in the MAC Freedom tournament.

Jay Poskitt converted a first-half penalty for the Ducks, who won three straight matches to finish the regular season at 10-6-1 on the year and 5-3 in conference play. The victory extended the Ducks' streak of seasons with double-digit victories to 20 (excluding the canceled 2020 season).
Joey Francis scored in the 20th minute for Lycoming, who fell to 7-8-3 on the year and to 3-5 in league play. Although just in its first season as a member of the MAC Freedom, Lycoming was tabbed the league's preseason favorite, however, the Warriors failed to advance to the conference tournament. Francis would be involved in another key moment shortly after scoring his first goal of the season.
Trailing by a goal in the final minute of the first half, senior
Brendan Mulligan went on a run through the 18. Poskitt headed senior
Adam Silva's throw-in in Mulligan's direction. Francis appeared to make contact with Mulligan right inside the penalty area, leading to a foul call and a penalty shot for the Ducks. Poskitt pushed the shot past Nick Wilke for his first goal since Spet. 21, 2019.
The teams appeared headed to overtime, when another fortuitous event occurred that gave the Ducks a second penalty kick opportunity. First-year
Emerico Vespucci directed a service into the 18, hoping to find graduate student
Cristiano Hocken. The pass was broken up by Lycoming's Colin Wieand with his right foot, but instead of sending the ball forward, the ball, instead, popped back up from his foot and off his right hand. Andino calmly struck the penalty shot into the net for his first goal since Spet. 28, 2019.
A physical affair from the opening whistle, the teams combined for 41 fouls and eight cards. Three of the cards were shown either just prior to Andino's goal or in the moments right after.
Senior
Aedan Boriotti made five saves to earn his eighth win of the year. Wilke made three saves in defeat for Lycoming.
Stevens finished the season tied with Misericordia and Wilkes with 15 points. When the conference's tiebreaker rules were followed, Misericordia moved into the third seed, leaving the Ducks and Wilkes in the play-in match. By virtue of Stevens' victory over Wilkes earlier in the season, the Ducks will host the match at the DeBaun Athletic Complex on Nov. 1.
Prior to the match, Men's Soccer honored its 16-member senior class in a special pre-match ceremony.
Inside the Numbers
- The Ducks used a 9-5 margin the second half to finish the match with a narrow 11-10 advantage in shots, although it was Lycoming that had a 7-5 edge in shots on target.
- Stevens held a 5-2 advantage in corners.
- Boriotti finished the regular season with a MAC Freedom-leading 0.888 goals-against average.
- Stevens finished as the stingiest defense in the MAC Freedom, allowing 15 goals over 17 matches (0.88 opponents scoring average). The Ducks also led the league in scoring margin.
- The Ducks entered the match 0 for 2 on penalties, before converting their two attempts today. Stevens is aiming to hold an opponent without a penalty (excluding postseason opportunities to break a tie) for an entire season for the first time since 2014.
Unsung Hero
- Senior Matthew Pinho recorded his second team save of the season, thwarting Francis' initial scoring attempt from the mouth of the goal.
From the Sidelines - Head Coach Dale Jordan
- "A really tough game, which felt like a conference final. I am delighted that the guys get a chance to extend the season."
- "A massive team effort today - a lot of guys contributing to the win."
