Men’s Soccer Tops King’s 3-2 for Second Straight Victory

Silva's brace leads Ducks to come-from-behind victory

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (October 9, 2021)  – Senior Adam Silva scored a pair of goals to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team to a come-from-behind victory over King's College Saturday in a MAC Freedom matchup at McCarthy Stadium.

Graduate student Cristiano Hocken registered a pair of assists for the Ducks, who won their second straight match to improve to 7-4-1 on the year and to 2-1-0 in conference play. Buck Diacont and Pat Holton scored for King's, who fell to 4-4-1 on the year and to 1-1-0 in league play.

Senior Aedan Boriotti made a pair of saves for Stevens, who moved to 2-1 all-time against King's. Cole Catherman stopped five shots for King's, who saw its two-match winning streak come to an end.

Silva scored in the 29th minute and in the 63rd minute to post his second career brace. With the team's tied at one, the Ducks took advantage of miscommunication by the Monarchs just inside the 18. Hocken drew a pair of defenders, along with Catherman, who came off his line. Hocken slid the ball to Silva, who slotted the ball between two Monarchs for his second goal of the year.

The Ducks took advantage of a turnover in the midfield to find the back of the net for the third time. First-year Luca Campbell sent a well-placed cross to the left side of the 18, where Silva was able to get a lengthy running start before striking the ball into the net. The senior has totaled three goals over his last two matches.

Stevens jumped on the board in the 25th minute, tying the match courtesy of junior Sean Ryan's first collegiate goal. Hocken played a touch pass over Ryan, who sent a rocket from just inside the 18. Hocken, the reigning MAC Freedom Offensive Player of the Year now sits in second place in the conference with 1.30 points per match. Silva would put Stevens in front less than four minutes later.

The Ducks' comeback was needed after King's opened scoring in the 15th minute. Diacont collected a pass from Aziz Atiyeh and directed a shot beyond Boriotti's reach, and into the left side of the net. The Monarchs cut into the Ducks' lead in the 81st minute when Holton headed a service into the left side of the net. Boriotti stopped Aidan Oyler's try in the 87th minute to preserve the result.

Turning Point
  • With time winding down in the opening half, Boriotti made a brilliant save on King's Justin Decoteau from the left side of the 18.

Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens held a 21-10 advantage in shots, including an 8-5 margin in shots on goal. Silva had seven shots to lead the Ducks, while Oyler came off the bench to lead King's with three.
  • The Ducks earned four corners, while holding the Monarchs to 3.
  • Stevens' three goals matched a season-high for a King's opponent, while the Ducks' 21 are the most against the Monarchs this season.

  • "Our midfield controlled the first half and that helped us create several chances."
