Women’s Basketball Tops Eastern Connecticut 58-49 For First Victory of the Season

UNION, N.J. (November 12, 2021)  – Junior Danielle Cornetta shot 8 for 14 from the floor to match a career high with 18 points to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team to a 58-49 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University Friday in a first-round matchup in the Kean Classic at Harwood Arena.

Senior Jess Broad notched her eighth career double-double with 20 points and 11 boards for the Ducks, who picked up their first victory of the season in moving to 1-1 on the year. The victorious Ducks will take on Kean, who routed Baruch College on the other side of the bracket.

Julie Keckler scored 14 points to lead three Warriors in double figures. Eastern Connecticut dropped to 0-2. It is believed to be the first meeting between the teams.

Cornetta turned in one of the best shooting performances of her career, sinking 4 of her 8 attempts in the first half and 4 of her 6 shots in the second half to finish an efficient 57 percent from the floor. The Whitehouse Station, New Jersey native made both of her 3-point attempts, finishing perfect from behind the arc for the third time in her career. Cornetta also matched a career high with seven rebounds. Cornetta previously scored 18 points in a victory over Yeshiva on Mar. 3, 2021.

A concerted effort on defense allowed the Ducks to stifle the Eastern Connecticut offense in the first and fourth quarters, enabling Stevens to come away with the victory. The Ducks held the Warriors to 4 of 14 shooting in the opening quarter and then to just 4 for 16 in the fourth quarter, while forcing a total of 10 turnovers, to seal the victory

While the Ducks were causing havoc on the defensive end, sharp-shooting from Cornetta and seniors Meghan Douglas and Vanessa Elliott, allowed Stevens to create further separation. The Duck trio combined to shoot 5 for 5 in the final quarter, helping Stevens to a 63.6% shooting percentage from the floor.

Pivotal Point
  • A short jumper by Taylor Salto trimmed the Ducks' lead to one with 33 seconds left in the third quarter.
  • Senior Allie Moss scored on a layup that just beat the buzzer to push the Ducks' lead to three heading into the final period.
  • Moss would feed Broad for a short jumper on the Ducks' first possession of the fourth quarter.
  • First-year Lucy Alberici stripped Jenna Serrantino leading to a fastbreak layup for Cornetta as the Ducks pushed their lead back seven.
  • All totaled the six straight points took place over a 68-second stretch overlapping the final two quarters.
  • Stevens would push its lead to 11 before Eastern Connecticut finally got on the board 3:46 into the period.

Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens outshot Eastern Connecticut, finishing 24 for 61 from the floor (39.3%), while the Warriors finished 19 for 63 (30.2).
  • Thanks to a 20-13 advantage on the offensive glass, the Warriors outrebounded the Ducks 48-41.
  • Broad finished with two blocks.
  • Eastern Connecticut led for just 31 seconds, scoring the first point of the game on a free throw 2:35 into the opening period.
  • Broad matched Keckler with a game-high four steals.
  • Sophomores Anika Damera and Ashlyn Barry made their season debuts.
  • Although Eastern Connecticut held an advantage on the offensive boards, it was Stevens that held a 13-11 edge in second-chance parts.
  • Stevens turned 21 ECSU turnovers into 24 points.
  • The Ducks did not concede a fast-break basket.
  • Each team scored 32 points in the paint.

Unsung Hero
  • Douglas quietly finished with five points and seven rebounds, but finished the night +17.

From the Sidelines - Head Coach Megan Haughey
  • "I was very proud of our defensive energy and focus. We took multiple charges and played hard on that end of the floor. We handled their runs and got stops, which was a focus. We fought in this one till the end; we have lots of areas for improvement, but that's what this time of year is for - just working to improve every day."
