Women’s Fencing Finishes 4-2 at Ranger Invitational – Part II

Barnes moves into fifth place on the all-time list for wins among sabre fencers

MADISON, N.J. (Nov. 7, 2021) – Led by double-digit individual victories by Kayleigh Kubit, Kiera Barnes and Clarie McNeill, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team posted a 4-2 record at Part II of the Drew Ranger Invitational Sunday.

The Ducks were able to take down Yeshiva University, Denison University, the University of Florida and Drew University but dropped contests against New Jersey Institute of Technology and Princeton University on the day to move their record to 13-4 this season.

Barnes, who became just the sixth sabre fencer to reach 200 career victories one week ago, hit another milestone as she moved past Krista Sticco for the fifth-most wins of any sabrest in program history with 218.
McNeill and Kubit, meanwhile, produced 10 wins each as the Ducks outscored competition 102-60 on the day.

The sabre squad led the way for Stevens with a 36-18 record while foil went 34-20 and epee finished 32-22.

Vs. Yeshiva (Win 24-3) Vs. Denison (Win 21-6)
  • Kubit finished 3-0, Elizabeth MacDonald won a pair of bouts and Isabel Gringeri and Ashley McDermott got one win apiece to send foil to a 7-2 win.
  • Sabre finished 6-3 thanks to three wins from Barnes, two by Daringa and one from Schmitt.
  • McNeill and Leigha Capra were both 3-0 while Kiera Mizzi was 2-1 as epee finished 8-1.
Vs. NJIT (Loss 17-10)
  • Foil narrowly dropped a 5-4 decision against the Highlanders as Kubit went 3-0 and McDermott added another win for the Ducks.
  • Barnes, Daringa and Schmitt all produced identical 2-1 records to send sabre to a 6-3 victory.
  • The epee squad could not grab an individual win, however, falling 9-0 and sealing the overall victory for NJIT.
Vs. Florida (Win 25-2)
  • Individual victories by Annabelle Crescenzo, Alyssa Ip, Kubit, MacDonald, Ashley McDermott and Sofia Savchuk sent foil to a perfect 9-0 win over the Gators.
  • A group effort also gave the Ducks an 8-1 win at sabre as Barnes, Chen, Daringa, Gellerstein and Schmitt all picked up wins.
  • Beke, Capra, Jain, McNeill and Mizzi all had at least one win to send epee to an 8-1 win and the Ducks to a dominant team victory.
Vs. Drew (19-8)
  • Stevens picked up a narrow 5-4 win at foil to open things up as Kubit went 2-0 and Ellis, MacDonald and McDermott all produced individual wins.
  • Barnes and Daringa both went 3-0 and Schmitt finished 2-1 as the sabre squad produced an 8-1 victory to give the Ducks some breathing room.
  • Epee sealed the win for Stevens with a 6-3 decision thanks to three wins from McNeill, two by Capra and another by Mizzi.
Vs. Princeton (Loss 24-3)
  • The Ducks closed the competition with a loss at the hands of NCAA powerhouse Princeton, staring with a 9-0 loss at foil.
  • Schmitt was able to give Stevens its first win against the Tigers, but was the lone sabrest to grab a victory as the Ducks fell 8-1.
  • McNeill finished with an impressive 2-1 record as the Ducks dropped a 7-2 decision at epee.
Next Up
  • Stevens returns to the strips in the Vassar Invitational in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Sunday, Nov. 14.
  • The Ducks will face off against Wellesley College, Sacred Heart University, Cornell University, Denison University, Hunter College, Lafayette University, Wagner University and Army in the competition.
