HOBOKEN, N.J. (December 11, 2021) – Senior
Allie Moss poured in a season-high 17 points and classmate
Jess Broad recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 boards as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team led nearly wire-to-wire in defeating No. 19/20 University of Scranton Saturday in a non-conference matchup at Canavan Arena.
Senior
Vanessa Elliott sank four threes and first-year
Lucy Alberici came off the bench to add five points and six boards for the Ducks, who used a 15-0 third-quarter run to pull away from the Lady Royals in the second half to move to 8-2. It is believed that the double-digit win marked the Ducks' first over a ranked opponent since Feb. 14, 2012, when the Ducks
topped then-No. 6 William Paterson, 69-68 in Canavan Arena..
Abby Anderson had a game-high 22 points and Bridget Monaghan added 12 for Scranton, who saw their four-game winning streak come to end in falling to 6-2. The Ducks' victory was the program's first over the perennial power and snapped Scranton's six-game winning streak in the all-time series.
The Ducks got off to a fast start with a long three by Elliott opening scoring and forcing a Scranton timeout just over a minute into play. Three of the Ducks' first four baskets were from long range as Stevens matched a season high with eight baskets from long distance.
While the Ducks were dialed in on the offensive end, an aggressive defensive effort held Scranton in check in the opening period, forcing the Lady Royals, who entered the game averaging the seventh-most three-pointers per game in Division III (9.9), to just 4 for 15 from behind the arc, including an 0 for 4 performance in the first quarter.
Scranton used a 15-9 advantage in the second quarter to pull within one, but the Ducks used a 15-0 run in the third quarter to take control of the game. Moss and Elliott combined for three 3's and four different student-athletes scored during the game-changing sequence.
Moss shot 3 of 7 from long distance and was a perfect 6 for 6 from the line to lead the team in scoring for the second time this season. The Raleigh, North Carolina native also dished out five assists without committing a turnover helping the Ducks recorded 18 assists on 23 baskets.
Pivotal Point
- After Anderson made a three top open second-half scoring and give Scranton its only lead of the game, Elliott answered right back with a three of her own to put Stevens back in front.
- The Lady Royals had a chance to tie the game, but senior Meghan Douglas rejected a Monaghan layup that led to a transition basket for Broad.
Inside the Numbers
- Scranton outshot Stevens 38.2% to 35.9%, however the Ducks only allowed five baskets in three of the four quarters.
- The Ducks held Scranton's Monaghan in check from long distance, holding her 0 for 1 from behind the arc. Monaghan came into the game leading the country with 4 made 3's per game and second in 3-point shooting (57%).
- Stevens won the battle of the boards 40-33, including a 13-7 edge on the offensive glass. The Ducks' advantage on the offensive glass led to a 10-4 edge in second-chance points.
- Stevens matched a season-low with 11 turnovers, while forcing Scranton into 13.
- The Lady Royals led for just 19 seconds.
- Scranton attempted only three free throws through the first three quarters. Conversely, the Ducks didn't attempt their first shots from the line until Moss made two in the third quarter after a technical foul was assessed to the Scranton bench.
- Douglas led the Ducks with two blocks and Moss and Broad each had two steals.
Unsung Hero
- Senior Amber Porrett came off the bench to pull down five rebounds over 17 minutes. The Dumont, New Jersey native also blocked a shot and sank a pair of free throws in the final minute to help secure the victory.
From the Sidelines - Head Coach Megan Haughey
- "I am proud of this group. Scranton is a great team, who plays hard. Our motto was '40 hard minutes,' and we played hard for every minute of that game; a true credit to our kids and to our leadership."
