MADISON, N.J. (March 10, 2021) – Senior
Maguire Sweeney and sophomore
Brett Bischoping each fell one rebound shy of a double-double but the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team was unable to get past a hot-shooting Drew University and fell 85-75 Wednesday evening in a non-conference matchup at Baldwin Gym.
In his second career start, Sweeney shot 50 percent from the floor to finish with 10 points, while pulling down a career-high nine rebounds. Bischoping matched Sweeney's efforts with 10 points and nine boards of his own and first-year
Mike Goodall came off the bench to lead both teams with a career-high 19 points for the Ducks, who dropped their season finale to close out the abbreviated 2020-21 campaign at 0-4.
Michael Kane and Carter Truby each netted a team-high 14 points for Drew, who improved to 7-1. Coming off the first Landmark Conference championship in program history, the Rangers have won five straight. Tonight's meeting was the first between the in-state foes since Nov. 21, 2015.
After the hosts jumped out to an early lead, it was Bischoping that broke the seal on the rim for the Ducks, taking advantage of a nifty pass from junior
Sashank Sindhia to beat the Drew press. Sindhia would convert a layup of his own two possessions later to give the Ducks their first lead of the evening.
Drew would reclaim the lead on a Malachi Walker three but a pair of Bischoping drew the teams even at 10 with a pair of free throws. The Ducks made six of their nine attempts from the charity stripe.
Goodall netted his first points of the evening on back-to-back baskets as the Ducks made 14 of 37 shots in the opening half. Taking the same number of shots in the second half, the home team fared slightly better, connecting on 18 baskets to finish the game shooting 43 percent (32 for 74) from the floor. Conversely, while the Ducks improved their shooting over the game's final 20 minutes, Drew went the opposite way, making four fewer baskets (14) in the second half than they did in the first (18) on three more attempts.
Drew Gallagher answered Goodall's second field goal with a driving layup to spark a 7-0 run for the Rangers that put them up for good.
Trailing by as much as 26 points in the second half, the Ducks responded by outscoring Drew 28-17 over the final 10 minutes of the game to provide the final 10-point margin. Six different student-athletes contributed over the final stretch, including a three-point play from sophomore
Lorenzo Spinazzi and a jumper by sophomore
Conor Coffey on what would turn out to be the Ducks' final possession of the season.
Pivotal Point
- After pulling to within 15 in the final minute of the first half, the Ducks came up just short on a pair of shots that would have further trimmed their deficit.
- After the intermission, Drew went on an 8-0 run over the first two minutes of the second half to push the lead to 23.
- Lybrant Robinson began the sequence with a short jumper and threes by Kane and David Gervase ended the stretch.

- Seven of Bischoping's nine rebounds came on the offensive glass, the most for any Duck since now senior Alec DiPietrantonio pulled down eight offensive rebounds on Jan. 11, 2020.
- Stevens held a 14-7 edge in offensive boards that led to a 17-8 advantage in second-chance points.
- The Ducks outscored Drew in the paint 44-36.
- Walker led all student-athletes with four blocks to become the program's all-time leader (171) for career blocks. Goodall registered the Ducks' lone block on the evening for his first career rejection.
- Behind the work of Sweeney and Bischoping on the boards, Stevens outrebounded Drew 43-37 to post the largest rebounding margin of the season.
- Drew's Malcolm Newman dished out a game-high eight assists. Goodall and Coffey each handed out two to pace Stevens.
- In addition to Bischoping, Coffey made his first career start.
- Sophomore Peter White had a game- and career-high three steals. As a team, the Ducks averaged nine steals per game.
Unsung Hero
- Sophomore Jacob Krantz shot an efficient 2 for 3 from behind the arc to finish with six points over a career-high 19 minutes.
From the Court (Head Coach Bobby Hurley)
- "It was great to have another opportunity to compete tonight. We had some bright spots, but we struggled at times to defend a very good Drew team. Even though our time was limited with our group this year, there are many positives that we will take into next year. The results were not what we hoped for, be we appreciate the time that we had together and thank all those who made this experience possible."
