Nunez Breaks Program Record for 3-Pointers in a Game to Lead Women’s Basketball to 84-79 Win over Drew

Graduate student from San Marcos, Calif., nets 24 of 30 total points in first quarter to break current teammate's record

MADISON, N.J. (March 11, 2021) – In what was likely the penultimate game of her collegiate career, graduate student Emily Nunez produced a spectacular 30-point performance, knocking down nine shots from beyond the arc to break the program record for 3-pointers in a game, to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team to an 84-79 win over Drew University.

Nunez went 10 for 15 from the floor in the contest and 9 for 14 from downtown to break the record of seven 3's previously set by current classmate Christina Li on Jan. 13, 2018. Not only did she shatter the record, she did so in less than two quarters of game action, hitting her eighth 3-pointer with over nine minutes left in the second quarter.

She is also the first women's basketball student-athlete at Stevens to score at least 30 points in a game since Megan Brown's 31-point, 18-rebound performance in the 2018 Empire 8 semifinal win over The Sage Colleges.

The Ducks never trailed in the contest and led by as many 16 points as they picked up win number two on the season.

Stevens had a pair of other student-athletes in double figures in the game as Jess Broad totaled 17 points and Li finished with 11. Additionally, junior Amber Porrett was a force on the glass, pulling down 13 rebounds, six of which were on the offensive glass.

Pivotal Point
  • The Rangers, who shot an impressive 47.1 percent from the floor themselves in the contest, were able to mount a comeback late in the fourth quarter to pull within three at 65-62 with 6:15 remaining.
  • The Ducks answered, however, with a quick 7-0 run that featured layups from Lily Taeuber and Allie Moss as well as a 3-point basket by Broad, the only made 3-pointer for Stevens not made by Nunez in the game, to push the lead back to 10 and put the game away.
How it Happened
  • Nunez was feeling it from the start, scoring 15 of the Ducks' first 17 points of the contest, going 4 for 5 from beyond the arc in that stretch to give Stevens a 17-13 edge.
  • With the score 21-15, Nunez extended the lead once again with back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers to push the lead to 13 at 33-20.
  • Early in the second, Li gave the Ducks their largest lead of the game at 16 with a fastbreak layup to make the score 44-28.
  • Drew refused to go away, though, scoring 20 of the final 28 points in the quarter to make the score 52-48 in favor of Stevens headed into the break.
  • With a double team and/or a face guard on Nunez throughout the second half, the Ducks had to find other options for scoring, insert Broad and Porrett.
  • With the score 60-60 with 3:21 left in the third, Porrett was able to get to the free throw line on two separate occasions where she went 3 for 4 and Broad hit a jumper with six seconds left to give Stevens a 65-60 advantage headed into the final stanza.
  • After Broad's big 3-pointer and Moss's layup with 3:41 left, the Ducks were able to keep the Rangers at arms-length the rest of the way.
  • Nunez added an exclamation point with just over a minute to play, nailing her first 3-point bucket since early in the second period to push the lead to 83-74 and effectively salt the game away.
Inside the Numbers
  • Nunez posted 24 points in the first quarter alone, the most points in a single period by any student-athlete in program history since the NCAA moved from halves to quarters prior to the 2015-16 season.
  • The Ducks started hot and ended strong, shooting 61.1 percent from the floor in the first quarter and 42.1 percent in the fourth.
  • Stevens was active on the defensive end and were able to cash in on Drew's offensive mistakes, converting 16 Ranger turnovers into 23 points while Drew had just nine points off 14 Duck turnovers.
  • The bench was a big factor for Stevens' success tonight as the Ducks cashed in 37 bench points compared to just nine for Drew.
  • The Rangers found their success in the paint, holding a 50-32 edge in points down low as well as a 20-9 advantage in second chance points.
  • Much as they have all season, Stevens effectively shared the basketball as they produced 20 assists on 30 total made baskets.
  • Moss and Li got the offensive attack going for the Ducks as Moss totaled five assists and Li added four.
Unsung Hero
  • She only scored four points in the contest, but Porrett's presence on the glass was felt in a big way. Her career-high 13 rebounds were the most among anyone in the game and her four points all came at the line in crucial spots for the Ducks.
From the Sidelines (Head Coach Meg Haughey)
  • "We came together defensively and worked as a unit to get stops down the stretch. We won loose balls and played extremely hard. Emily had an amazing night, as did Amber taking control of the boards. Overall, it was an excellent, gritty win."
Next Up
  • The 2020-21 season concludes for the Ducks on Sunday when they travel to Cobleskill, N.Y., to take on SUNY-Cobleskill at 1:00 p.m.
  • It is believed to be the first matchup between these two programs.
