Doylestown, Pa. (March 13, 2021) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball program put on an offensive display in a doubleheader sweep of Delaware Valley University Saturday, winning game one 15-8 and grabbing game two 11-2 to move to 4-0 for the first time since at least the 1997-98 season.
The Ducks were led offensively by
Nate Zuckerman who finished the day 5 for 9 with six RBIs, a double and four runs scored while
Thomas Paulich went 6 for 8 with four RBIs in the doubleheader.
On the bump, Stevens got a stellar effort from starter
Roy Iversen who tossed 7.0 innings and allowed just two runs (one earned) on four hits while fanning four to pick up the win.
Alex Smith got the win on the mound in game one after throwing 2.1 innings and giving up one run on one hit with a strikeout.
"Today's script didn't go exactly as planned, but to come out of the day with two road wins was an excellent result for us," head coach
Kristaps Aldins said.
In addition to Zuckerman and Paulich,
Ryan Wall,
Ryan Finegan,
Johnny Albrecht,
Christian Kreiser and
Chris Silos all had at least one game in the doubleheader with multiple hits.
In total, the Ducks pounded out 30 hits, 26 runs and only struck out seven times over 15 offensive innings.
Stevens started the scoring from the top in the first game of the day as
Gannon Kenney-McGowan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home Zuckerman. One batter later, Albrecht grounded into a 6-4-3 double play but was able to bring another run home to make the score 2-0.
It was more of the same in the second for the Ducks as Zuckerman brought home Kreiser on a sacrifice fly to center field to make it 3-0.
Stevens then used its' speed to tack on a couple more as both Finegan and
Brett Mendez stole home on Ethan Saxe to extend the lead to five. Albrecht then made the score 6-0 with an RBI single to single to bring home Paulich.
The score remained 6-0 until the bottom of the third when the Aggies had their most productive half inning at the plate of the day.
After back-to-back doubles from Jonathan Drews and Timmy Lallis cut the lead in half, DelVal got RBI singles off the bat of Shawne Eldrige and Cole Holsinger to knot things at six. A passed ball then gave the Aggies a 7-6 edge and seven runs on the board in the inning.
DelVal pushed the lead to 8-6 one inning later, but the Ducks responded in kind as Paulich ripped a two-RBI single to left one half inning later to bring home Mendez and Kreiser and tie things up once again.
Kenney-McGowan then gave Stevens the lead for good with a single through the left side to plate Paulich.
The Ducks weren't not there, however, as they tacked on three more in the top of the sixth thanks to an RBI double off the bat of Zuckerman and a two-RBI single from Paulich to make it 13-8.
The Aggies threatened to cut into the lead in the bottom half as they put runners on first and second with one away. Looking to limit the damage, Stevens went to reliever
Anthony Pron who delivered a pair of big strikeouts to keep the edge at five.
Zuckerman struck again in the seventh, extending the lead to 15-8 with a two-RBI single through the left side.
Pron then slammed the door in the bottom of the seventh, closing the game out with a swinging strikeout.
Game two saw the Ducks fall behind early after a bases loaded hit-by-pitch and an RBI fielder's choice gave DelVal a 2-0 advantage after one.
Stevens responded in the top of the second, however, as Silos deposited an RBI single into right and was subsequently brought home on a two-RBI single from Zuckerman to put the Ducks on top 3-2.
It was more of the same in the third as Albrecht started things off with an RBI single through the left side to bring home wall. Two batters later,
Chris Zickert collected his first collegiate hit in a big way, doubling to center field to plate Pauich and Albrecht.
"Zickert did a great job stepping in to provide a key double in game two and he made some big defensive plays in game two behind Iversen, who really had it all going in a complete game effort," Aldins said. "Defensively, I thought our infielders did a fine job throughout the day, especially considering they were playing on a dirt surface for the first time in over a year."
Silos added his second RBI single in as many innings one batter later and Mendez lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score Zickert and make it 8-2.
That was more than enough for Iversen on the mound as he settled in after the shaky start. After the first, the senior allowed just three baserunners the rest of the way to pick up his 10th career victory.
Outside of the seven-run inning in game one for the Aggies, the Ducks pitching staff combined to allow just three runs on six hits in 13 innings of action on the hill.
The same two teams are back on the diamond Sunday for a doubleheader in Hoboken at Dobbelaar Baseball Field at 12:00 and 2:30 p.m. Live stats and video will be available on StevensDucks.com.
