Cornetta Drives her Way to New Career-High to Lead Women’s Basketball to Win Over Yeshiva

Ducks pick up first victory of 2020-21 season

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 3, 2021) – In the second contest of her sophomore campaign, Danielle Cornetta put on a clinic in getting to the rim, producing a career-best 18-point performance to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team to a 79-47 victory over Yeshiva University Wednesday inside Canavan Arena.

The Ducks trailed by as many as eight points in the second quarter but outscored the Maccabees 64-24 over the final 27 minutes of game action to take home the 32-point victory, matching the largest margin of victory from the 2019-20 season (at Delaware Valley – Feb. 1, 2020).

Cornetta, who also pulled down six rebounds and dished out four assists, did the majority of her damage driving to the basket as seven of her eight made shot attempts (8 for 14 from the field) came from inside the paint.

Stevens also got a solid performance off the bench from first-year Caitlin Barry who notched nine points and three boards in just eight minutes of game action in the second appearance of her career.

Yeshiva started off the contest hot and rode the momentum through the end of the first and into the second period. Trailing 12-7, the Maccabees bridged the quarters with a 16-3 run to take a 23-15 lead, their largest of the game.

The Ducks answered immediately, however, as they scored 19 of the final 21 points of the half fueled by back-to-back non-traditional 3-point plays from Cornetta and back-to-back 3-pointers from beyond-the-arc from Emily Nunez and Christina Li to take a 34-25 lead into the break.

Stevens did not let off the gas to begin the second half as they swelled the lead to as many as 14 in the first three minutes of the third when Barry hit a jumper off an assist from Vanessa Elliott.

The two teams traded buckets for the remainder of the quarter and the Ducks headed into the final stanza with a 54-38 edge.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Ducks in a large way as they outscored the Maccabees 25-9, thanks in large part to a 9 for 12 performance from the charity stripe, in the period.

Turning Point
  • Trailing 23-17 with just over seven minutes left in the second quarter, Cornetta knifed into the Yeshiva defense, hit a layup while drawing a foul and sunk the free throw.
  • After a defensive stop, Cornetta was able to get out on the fastbreak and hit another jumper in the paint off a stellar assist from Allie Moss while getting fouled once again. Cornetta hit the free throw and knotted the contest at 23 in less than 30 seconds of game action.
  • Two minutes later, Cornetta hit another jumper in the paint and Li and Nunez nailed a pair of 3-point buckets to give Stevens the lead for good.
Inside the Numbers
  • Both Jess Broad and Moss were solid for the Ducks off the bench as they both tallied eight points and four assists apiece. Additionally, Broad pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
  • Stevens crashed the boards hard, outrebounding Yeshiva 60-44. The Ducks pulled down at least 60 boards just once last season (at Occidental – Nov. 23, 2019).
  • Defensively, Stevens held Yeshiva to 29.0 percent from the floor and 23.5 from 3-point range while shooting 38.8 percent from the floor in the contest themselves.
  • The Ducks assisted on 20 of their 31 total made baskets in the contest with Cornetta, Moss and Broad all having four each.
  • Stevens held the advantage in almost every offensive statistical category: Points off turnovers – 28-8 | Second Chance Points – 19-4 | Bench Points – 62-19 | Points in the Paint – 42-20 | Fastbreak Points 18-4.
  • First-years Elissa Nsenkyire and Anika Damera along with senior Lily Taeuber all produced six points each in the contest.
Unsung Hero
  • Making just her second collegiate appearance, Caitlin Barry filled up the stat sheet in just eight minutes of game action with nine points and three boards while going 3 for 5 from the floor and a perfect 3 for 3 from the line.
From the Sidelines (Head Coach Megan Haughey)
  • "I thought Yeshiva came in tonight and played with speed and energy that was tough for us to guard. Credit them for their energy and team play."
  • "I was proud of how we continued to fight through the ups and downs of the game. We got many different contributions from a variety of different players once again. It was a great way to work to build our foundation."
Up Next
  • The Ducks will return to the court Friday in Hoboken for an inter-squad Red/White Scrimmage.
  • Stevens will follow that up with a trip to Madison, N.J. against Drew on Thursday, March 11th at 7:00 p.m.
  • The two teams have not met up since 2006 when the Ducks defeated the Rangers 71-43 at home.
