Women’s Lacrosse Rallies but Falls at Misericordia, 17-14

Bednarski moves into second place on career scoring list, but Cougars pull away late to down the Ducks.

DALLAS, N.J. (April 11, 2021)  – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team rallied from an early four-goal deficit before Misericordia University pulled away in the second half en route to a 17-14 victory over the Ducks Sunday in a MAC Freedom matchup at Mangelsdorf Field.

Junior Camryn Rogers matched a career high with seven goals to lead the Ducks and fifth-year Kyra Bednarski added five of her own to move into second place on the program's all-time career scoring list. With the loss, the Ducks dropped to 4-4 on the year and to 3-2 in MAC Freedom play. The loss snapped Stevens' two-game winning streak.

Michelle Torzilli matched Rogers with seven goals and Justine Johnson added two goals and four assists to lead Misericordia, who improved to 5-2 on the year and to 3-0 in league play. It was believed to be the first meeting between the programs.

"Misericordia played a great game against us and capitalized on our mistakes," said head coach Karen Shaddock. "We dug ourselves out of a hole three different times, but against good teams, you can't do that. We continue to get better every day and every practice. We will do the same after today. We have to play for a full 60 minutes every game."

Fifth-year Emily Shanklin and sophomore Zoe Cook each netted one goal, while Bednarski, Rogers, and first-year Emily Leiby each added an assist to round out the Ducks' scoring.

Senior Peyton Taylor drew the start in goal and junior Lauren Cunniff relieved in the second half. Cunniff made a season-high seven saves, but suffered her second loss of the season. Maggie McGovern made eight saves for Misericordia to earn the victory.

Johnson opened scoring with consecutive goals in the first two minutes of the game. The Cougars would go on to score the first four goals of the contest, before Stevens began to mount its comeback on consecutive goals from Bednarski 40 seconds apart. Bednarski finished with six points on the day to bring her career total to 369 to move past Valerie Barnhart on the career scoring list. The Syracuse, New York native is currently the NCAA's active career leading scorer. She trails Hall of Famer Alyssa Pigott, who totaled 389 points during her time in Hoboken.

Rogers netted two of her goals over a two-minute stretch midway through the opening half, bookending Cook's goal, to draw the Ducks even at five. In her first season on Castle Point, the Branchburg, New Jersey native has scored 18 goals over four games and has collected hat tricks in each of her last three contests.

Misericordia jumped back out in front by three only for the resilient Ducks to pull back within one at halftime on Rogers' hat trick goal.

Coming out of the intermission, Torzilli opened second-half scoring and the Cougars pushed their advantage back to three on Torzilli's fourth tally of the contest. Bednarski and Rogers combined to score each of the Ducks' first five goals of the frame to draw the teams even at 13.

Shanklin netted her 17th goal of the year to knot the teams at 14, but Misericordia scored the final three goals of the game over the last eight-and-a-half minutes to secure the victory.

Stevens outshot Misericordia 32-28, including a 20-10 margin in the first half. Rogers led all student-athletes with 14 shots and Bednarski had 10. Torzilli had seven shots to lead the Cougars.

In wet conditions, the teams combined for 38 turnovers, with Stevens forcing Misericordia into 20. Six different Ducks registered one caused turnover and the Ducks forced the Cougars into 14 unforced errors.

Misericordia had a 19-14 advantage in draw controls. Each side corralled nine in the first half, with the Cougars outearning the Ducks 10-5 over the final 30 minutes. Rogers led the Ducks with a career-high seven, while junior Morgan Westerby added three. Torzilli had six to lead Misericordia.

Rogers scooped three ground balls to lead Stevens, while seven student-athletes each picked up two, to help the Ducks to a 22-15 edge in the statistic.

Bednarski was a perfect 3 for 3 on free-position shots as Stevens was 6 for 10 on the day as a team. Bednarski leads the MAC Freedom in free-position percentage. Alyssa Delgadillo scored on her lone eight-meter shot, but Misericordia was only 2 for 6 on free-position shots.

Up Next: Women's Lacrosse returns to the DeBaun Athletic Complex for a conference matchup with Arcadia University on April 14. The teams are believed to have met three previous times, with the Ducks holding a 3-0 lead in the all-time series.
