CENTER VALLEY, Pa. (April 14, 2021) – Jessie Masur tossed her fourth consecutive complete game shutout set a new program record as she extended her consecutive innings scoreless streak to 29 1/3 innings to help the Stevens Institute of Technology softball team sweep a doubleheader against DeSales University Wednesday, winning game one 3-0 and game two 5-1.
Masur's scoreless streak shatters the record previously held by
Marissa Cappello who tossed 23 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings in 2018. To take it a step further, Masur has not given up an earned run in 38 1/3 innings in the circle as she gave up a single unearned run in the last inning of her start on March 27 against Delaware Valley.
With the sweep, Stevens moves to 13-5 overall and 12-2 in MAC Freedom play to remain in second place in the standings entering the final weekend series of the season while DeSales drops to 5-13, 4-10 in the MAC Freedom.
"We had some adjustments we needed to make in order to take two today and we did just that," head coach
Emily Kaczmarek said. "Small adjustments can go a long way. We'll go back to work tomorrow."
Reigning MAC Freedom Player of the Week
Samantha Schattin continued her impressive season as she finished the doubleheader 5 for 7 with three runs scored and an RBI. Schattin has hit safely in 13 consecutive games and improved her batting average to .561, good for second in the conference.
Additionally,
Madison Gemma had possibly the biggest hit of the day as she ripped her first home run of the season over the right field wall in the sixth inning of game two to give the Ducks some breathing room.
In the first contest of the day, Stevens scored its first runs of the day in the top half of the third inning.
Meg Halloran led off the frame and showed off her speed as she tripled to center field to put a runner in scoring position for Schattin. The fifth-year came through as she has throughout her career with an RBI single to right field to make the score 1-0.
After
Gina DeOliveira laid down her conference-high 10th sacrifice bunt of the season to move Schattin over,
Olivia Warner came to the plate as a pinch hitter with two outs and laced an RBI single into center field to double the lead for the Ducks.
Stevens tacked on another run in the fourth thanks to a leadoff walk by
Amanda Delorme, a sacrifice bunt by
Julia Baber and a bunt single by Halloran that led to her inducing a rundown between first and second to allow Delorme to scamper home.
That would be more than enough for Masur (9-1) who allowed just three hits over seven innings of work, striking out seven and walking just one. The senior is now tied for first in the MAC Freedom with an 0.89 earned run average this season with Arcadia's Juliana Presto. The duo will face off this weekend as the Ducks take on the Knights in a four-game set Saturday and Sunday.
Offensively, both Schattin and Halloran had two hits apiece in the win while
Abigail Circelli, Warner and
Siobhan Cottell added one hit each.
Kelsey Miller was effective in the circle for the Bulldogs but was saddled with the loss as she tossed a complete game and allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out one and issuing five walks.
The second contest saw the Ducks jump ahead once again with a two-run third inning.
Halloran was able to reach first on a catcher's interference with one out and moved to third on a fielder's choice from Schattin. DeOliveira then delivered an RBI groundout to score the first run and
Alex Schoellig brought home the second with an RBI single into center field.
The Bulldogs were able to scratch across a run in the bottom of the fourth on a leadoff walk, two groundball outs and a wild pitch to cut the lead in half at 2-1.
That would be all they would get, however, as
Erin Kreis gave up just one hit in her final 4 1/3 innings of work to pick up her third consecutive win in the circle.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the sixth when Gemma delivered the knockout punch.
After Schattin singled to lead off the inning, DeOliveira reached on a hit-by-pitch and Schoellig bunted the pair into scoring position, Gemma stepped to the plate and tattooed her first home run of the season over the right field fence to make the score 5-1 and add some insurance to the line score for the Ducks.
Kreis (4-4) delivered a pair of shutdown innings in the sixth and seventh and earned the win as she has now given up just two earned runs in her last 19 innings, lowering her season ERA to 4.28.
At the plate in game two, Schattin finished 3 for 4 with two runs scored as she now leads the MAC Freedom with 32 total hits this season.
Schoellig added a pair of hits as well in the game and has now hit safely in nine of the 12 games she has played in this season.
As a team, Stevens had seven hits in each ballgame while allowing just six in both games combined. The Ducks have now won six consecutive games and nine of their last 10 dating back to March 27.
As mentioned above, Stevens will return to action Saturday in a matchup of two of the top three teams currently in the MAC Freedom standings as Arcadia comes to Weehawken, N.J. to kick off a four-game set with a doubleheader starting a 1:00 p.m.
