Softball Races Past DeSales in Game One to Earn Doubleheader Split

Masur faces just one batter over the minimum in a complete-game shutout

WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (April 3, 2021) – Reigning MAC Freedom Pitcher of the Week Jessie Masur tossed a complete-game, one hit shutout and Samantha Schattin combined to go 5 for 7 with three extra-base hits in the doubleheader as the Stevens Institute of Technology softball team picked up a split against DeSales University Saturday, winning game one 10-0 (5 inn.) before dropping the second contest 5-2.

The Ducks moved to 6-2 in MAC Freedom competition this season as they earned their second run-rule victory in three games with the 10-run win in the first contest.

"Great game one today, extremely disappointing game two," head coach Emily Kaczmarek said. "We're a little too all over the place. We need to find some consistency in our offensive performance."

On the day, Masur pitched in both matchups and combined to toss 7.0 shutout innings while allowing just two hits and striking out five.

Schattin, meanwhile, had back-to-back multi-hit games to extend her hitting streak to seven games. She has now had at least two hits in each of her last five appearances and has accomplished the feat in nine of the 12 games this season.

Gina DeOliveira joined Schattin with multiple hits in each contest as she went 2 for 2 with a pair of runs scored in the first and followed it up with a 2 for 4 performance with an RBI in the second.

In the first game of the day, Stevens got the scoring started from the jump as Schattin ripped a double to lead things off, moved to third on a sac bunt from DeOliveira and scored on an RBI infield single off the bat of Meg Halloran.

One inning later, Siobhan Cottell added another run to the scoreboard as she connected with a 2-1 pitch to send it over the wall for her second homer of the season.

Still in the second, Julia Baber reached first on a single to the third baseman and subsequently scored on an RBI double from Alex Schoellig.

The Ducks tacked on three more runs in the third thanks to a sacrifice fly from Amanda Delorme and a two-run error on a fly ball to center by Cottell.

Leading 6-0 and needed two runs to end the game early, Stevens did that and then some in the bottom of the fourth.

After Halloran drove home her second run of the game on an RBI groundout, Madison Gemma stepped to the plate and delivered a ground-rule double over the center field fence to bring home Halloran and DeOliveira.

A Delorme two-out RBI single up the middle two batters later made the score 10-0 and put the Ducks in double figures for the third time this season.

In the circle, Masur (6-1) was dominant as she needed just 55 pitches to complete the outing and faced just one batter over the minimum. The senior's only blemish came in the top of the third when she gave up a two-out double to Sam Napoli, but she quickly erased the threat with a strikeout to end the inning.

With the win, Stevens is now 5-1 in the first game of doubleheaders this season with three of those victories coming via run-rule.

DeSales jumped ahead early in the second contest on an RBI groundout from Hallie Muffley, but pitcher Erin Kreis (1-4) limited the damage as she got a strikeout looking to strand runners on first and third.

The top of the lineup produced once again in the bottom half of the first as Schattin led things off with a triple and scored on an RBI groundout from DeOliveira to tie things at 1-1.

The Bulldogs struck for their biggest inning of the day in the top of the third as they put runners on first and second with two outs and got a big three-run home run off the bat of Amelia Howard to make the score 4-1.

Stevens threatened to answer with runs of their own in the bottom half as Schoellig, Schattin and DeOliveira all singled to open the inning and load the bases with nobody out.

Bulldog starting pitcher Heather Hall did not blink, however, as she got back-to-back infield ground balls that resulted in outs at the plate and a 3-4 putout to end the frame and preserve the three-run lead.

DeSales tacked on an insurance run in the top of the fifth after Lily Trexler hit a leadoff single, stole second, advanced to third on a fly ball and scored on an RBI groundout.

Baber gave the Ducks life in the bottom of the seventh with a one-out double to right field and moved to third on a wild pitch. Much as she had done all day, Schattin came through with a big hit as she singled through the left side to score Baber and cut the deficit to three.

After DeOliveira singled, Stevens brought the tying run to the plate with two outs in the person of Halloran. The junior could not plate another run, though, as Hall got her sixth strikeout to end the game.

Masur came on in relief of Kreis in the circle and allowed just one hit over 2.0 innings of work. She has now lowered her season earned run average to 1.27 and holds an 8.83 strikeout-to-walk ratio to rank 20th in all of NCAA Division III.

The Ducks return to the diamond Tuesday as they will complete the series and look to complete the sweep against Delaware Valley University in Weehawken with a doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
