Kreis, Masur Both Toss Complete Game One-Hit Shutouts to Help Softball Complete Sweep of DelVal

Kreis comes within one batter of being the first in program history to toss perfect game

WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (April 6, 2021) – Senior Jessie Masur and sophomore Erin Kreis both threw complete game, one-hit shutouts and the offense racked up 19 total runs as the Stevens Institute of Technology softball team earned a doubleheader sweep of Delaware Valley Tuesday, winning game one 10-0 and game two 9-0.

With the two wins, Stevens completed the four-game sweep of the Aggies after sweeping a road doubleheader on March 27 and moved to 8-2 in MAC Freedom play this season to remain in second place in the standings.

"We had two outstanding performances today from our pitching staff," head coach Emily Kaczmarek said. "Today's wins come from a total team effort. From sacrificing our at-bats for runs to changing up our approach for the betterment of the team. We're excited to see how we can build on this next."

Masur (7-1) started the day by allowing just one hit over five scoreless innings for the second consecutive start. She struck out seven batters and has now not allowed an earned run in her last 21 innings while lowering her earned run average to a league-best 1.14.

Not to be outdone, Kreis (2-4) twirled her own gem in the circle as she faced just one batter over the minimum in the second contest. The sophomore retired the first 14 batters she faced and made a bid to become the first softball student-athlete to throw a perfect game before giving up her only baserunner on a slow ground ball infield single with two outs in the fifth.

Offensively, the Ducks got multi-hit days from Samantha Schattin, Meg Halloran, Olivia Warner, Alex Schoellig and Julia Baber to earn their second and third run-rule victories in the last four contests.

Much as she has all season, Schattin started the Stevens rally in the bottom of the first with a leadoff bunt single and moved to second on an error. After Gina DeOliveira was hit by a pitch, Halloran came to the plate and delivered an RBI single through the left side of the infield to make it 1-0.

Madison Gemma was then walked to load the bases and bring up Victoria Kapp who started her return to the field with a sacrifice fly to center to bring home DeOliveira.

Stevens added two more in the bottom of the third thanks to an error and an RBI groundout off the bat of Gemma to bring the score to 4-0.

The offense for the Ducks exploded for six runs just three hits in the fourth inning.

Schoellig and Baber both singled and Schattin drew a walk to load the bases with one away in the inning. A wild pitch then scored Schoellig and DeOliviera re-loaded the bags by being plunked for the second time in the game.

Halloran earned her second RBI of the game one batter later as she drew a bases loaded walk and an errant throw by the catcher added another to make it 7-0.

Both DeOliveira and Halloran then raced home on wild pitches and Warner tacked on the 10th and final run of the contest with an RBI single to plate Elise Fauske.

In the first game, Halloran led the way offensively for the Ducks as she went 1 for 2 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Masur then slammed the door in the top of the fifth with back-to-back strikeouts to end the frame. She now leads the MAC Freedom in ERA, opponents' batting average (.138), innings pitched (49), strikeouts (60) and wins (7).

In the second contest, Stevens got things going in the bottom of the first once again as Schattin hit a leadoff single, stole second and raced home on an RBI double from DeOliveira.

With two away in the inning, Warner delivered once again with an RBI single to left to make the score 2-0.

In the second, Schoellig and Baber both started the inning with bunt singles to put runners at the corners with no outs for the top of the order.

Both Schattin and DeOliveira came through as Schattin hit an RBI groundout and DeOliveira brought home Baber on a perfect squeeze bunt to swell the lead to four.

After the next nine hitters of the game were retired, Stevens put themselves in position for another run-rule with a big fourth inning once again.

Baber led the inning off with a single, swiped second and came around to score on an RBI single off the bat of Schattin who raced all the way around to third on an error by the center fielder.

DeOliveira brought home Schattin one batter later with her second consecutive squeeze RBI sacrifice to make it 6-0 with one away.

Halloran continued the rally with another bunt single and Gemma brought her home when she ripped an RBI triple down the right field line. Gemma then was able to score and put the run-rule in effect on an RBI fielder's choice from Kapp.

Two batters later, a wild pitch brought home Kapp and pushed the lead to 9-0.

DeOliveira only had one official at-bat in the contest but was able to drive in three runs in the win.

Schattin, meanwhile, finished the doubleheader 3 for 5 with two RBI and four runs scored, extending her hitting streak to nine games. She ranks inside the top-three in the MAC Freedom in batting average (.545), slugging percentage (.795), on-base percentage (.574), runs scored (19), hits (24) and doubles (9).

That was more than enough for Kreis who had the best start of her career in the circle. While she only struck out one, Kreis was extremely effective in using her defense to her advantage as she got nine groundouts in the win.

Stevens has now won five of its last six games and has earned four of its nine wins via run-rule this season.

The Ducks return to action Saturday with a home doubleheader against FDU-Florham starting at 12:00 p.m. Live stats and video will be available on StevensDucks.com. Please refer to the spectator policy on our website regarding attendance at home contests this fall.
