MADISON, N.J. (April 30, 2021) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team remained undefeated on the season as they earned a 5-1 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham Campus before rain in the area stopped play for the day.
The Ducks took two of the three doubles points and earned wins at flights three, four and five singles to earn the win before poor weather wiped out the remainder of competition. Stevens moved to 7-0 on the season and 5-0 in MAC Freedom play with the win while FDU-Florham dropped to 3-4, 1-4 in the MAC Freedom.
"We came out today with the goal of competing and putting ourselves in position to get five points and strengthen our seeding for the conference tournament next week," head coach
Arik Zeevy said. "We did just that with a close 5-1 win that could have gone either way. We look forward to the challenge of Wilkes tomorrow and finishing the regular season strong."
In doubles competition to start the day, Stevens got an 8-5 win at flight one from
Audrey Heaberlin and
Makenna Sargis and an 8-0 victory at flight two by
Gabriella Tantillo and
Juliette Marchisio to make the score 2-1 headed into singles play.
It was Tantillo who gave the Ducks their third point of the competition as she earned a 6-0, 6-4 straight sets victory at line three. She has now won all seven singles matches she has played in this season, all of which came in straight sets.
Finishing just behind Tantillo was Marchisio who earned a near-perfect 6-1, 6-0 as she also pushed her singles record this season to 7-0.
Elsa Bley, competing in her first career tennis competition, looked like a four-year pro in her match-clinching win at line five as she posted a perfect 6-0, 6-0 victory for her first collegiate win.
"The player of the match today was Bley, who clinched the match at fifth singles in dominant fashion," Zeevy said.
Lines one, two and six were unable to be completed before the rain set in.
Along with Bley, both
Caitlin Carroll and
Nina Burden made their collegiate debuts on the courts in the match with Carroll playing at flight three doubles and Burden competing at line six singles.
Next Up: In what essentially is a competition for the MAC Freedom regular season title, the Ducks will travel to Wilkes-Barre, Pa. to take on Wilkes University Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Both teams are a perfect 5-0 in league play this season and the winner will claim the #1 seed in the conference tournament May 4-8.
