HOBOKEN, N.J. (May 7, 2021) – Junior
Marc Feliu earned MAC Freedom Tournament Most Valuable Player honors as he helped the Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team won its 11th straight conference championship after taking down DeSales University 5-0 Friday at Stevens Tennis Courts.
After winning 10 consecutive titles as a member of the Empire 8, the Ducks won their first MAC Freedom Championship in the first full year in the league.
With the win, Stevens improved to 11-0 on the season and clinched a spot in the NCAA Tournament also for the 11th straight season while the Bulldogs close the year 11-2 with their lone two losses coming against the Ducks.
"I couldn't be more proud with how our guys competed today to bring another conference title to Castle Point," head coach
Steve Gachko said. "It has been a very different regular season, but it is still rewarding to battle each day with this great group of guys. On a more comical note, I was especially impressed with our teams' relentless pursuit today to dump water on me once we clinched the match after two failed attempts."
For the 10th time in 11 matches this season, Stevens started the day by taking all three doubles points.
At flights one and two, the combinations of Feliu and first-year
Aashi Kulakarni and seniors
Keegan Morris and
Gabriel Sifuentes both took home 8-2 victories, respectively.
The first doubles matchup to finish up on the day was flight three, however, as junior
Mark Pabalan and junior
Garrett Kincaid earned a perfect 8-0 win for the fourth time on the year.
Heading into singles play needing just two wins to clinch the match, Feliu was the first to finish with a 6-0, 6-1 victory. He has won all 10 completed matches this season in straight sets and has taken 120 of the 132 total games he has played this season.
It was then a race to see who would win the decisive fifth point as Morris, Kulakarni and Sifuentes all won their first set they played and were up at least 4-0 in the second set.
Sifuentes was the one to win the race, though, as he grabbed a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win to seal the crown for the Ducks. He is now 84-6 across seven finished singles matches this season.
"We are excited to hear where we are headed for NCAA's on Monday and keep this wild season going!" Gachko said.
Next Up: Stevens now waits to see where they will play in the NCAA Tournament, with the selection show happening on NCAA.com on Monday, May 10th. The First Round will be Friday, May 14th with a site and an opponent to be determined.
