Field Hockey Starts MAC Freedom Play with 3-1 Win over King’s

Ducks get first goals of the season from Appleby, D. Hessels and Froehlich in the win

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (Sept. 25, 2021) – After falling behind 1-0 late in the first quarter, the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team scored three unanswered goals and controlled the pace of the game to open MAC Freedom competition with a 3-1 victory over King's College Saturday at McCarthy Stadium.

Sophomore Danielle Hessels scored her first career goal off a penalty corner thanks to a double assist from senior Aryana Muscara and Natalie Logan that proved to be the game-winner and help the Ducks win their third straight game and kick off conference play with a win over the Monarchs for the second straight season.

Stevens outshot King's 17-2 in the game and held an 11-2 advantage in shots on goal as they dominated possession throughout the contest and improved their record to 4-2, 1-0 MAC Freedom on the season.

After Sara Whitesell put the Monarchs on the board first in the 12th minute of game action, Stevens responded immediately when senior Alyssa Appleby collected a pass from Kila Eadie and fired a shot into the back of the cage for her first goal of the season.

The goal was the eighth of Appleby's career while Eadie collected her third career assist and first of the 2021 campaign. Eadie now has five points (two goals, one assist) this season after registering six total points (two goals, two assists) in her first two seasons on Castle Point combined.

With the score still tied at 1-1 in the 26th minute of game action, the Ducks took a lead they would not relinquish.

Muscara, who has inserted the ball into action on nearly every penalty corner for the Ducks this season, delivered her initial pass to Logan on the top-right of the box. Logan then fired a pass into the box and Hessels reached down with one hand and deflected the pass into the back of the cage.

It was the second assist of the season for Logan and the fourth for Muscara who now leads the team and is eighth in the MAC Freedom with 10 points on the year.

Stevens tacked on an insurance goal in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach late when Brynn Froehlich collected a loose ball in the circle and fired a back-handed shot past the goalie. It was Froehlich's first goal of the season after the team's leading returning goal scorer from the 2019 season with six.

The Ducks joined Misericordia University, FDU-Florham and Arcadia University as one of the four institutions to open conference play with a win.
