AMHERST, Mass. (September 28, 2021) – Senior
Aedan Boriotti made a pair of saves and the Stevens Institute of Technology went toe-to-toe with No. 20 Amherst College before falling 1-0 Tuesday in a non-conference match on a damp Hitchcock Field.
German Giammattei's header in the 72nd minute proved to ultimately be the difference for the nationally-ranked Mammoths, who improved to 6-1 on the year. Amherst reentered the United Soccer Coaches poll at No. 20 earlier in the day. Stevens dropped to 5-3-1 in the Ducks' final non-conference. The Tuesday matinee was the first meeting between the programs since 2008.
After a positional battle that produced just one shot on target in the first half, Amherst upped the offensive pressure in the second half, nearly doubling its first-half shot output, before breaking through in the 72nd minute. After a Duck foul, Amherst's Gabe Gitler directed a service towards the net, where Giammattei used his six-foot frame to jump above the pack and redirect the ball back across the six towards the far post, just beyond the reach of a leaping Stevens defender.
Stevens would have three quality attempts in the final minutes to force overtime. Graduate student
Tyler Dressman had his shot blocked in the 86th minute, which led to a corner for the Ducks. Senior
Adam Silva then directed his service into a dangerous area and junior
Sean Ryan's scoring attempt was snagged by Amherst goalkeeper Bernie White. Senior
Matthew Pinho had the final shot of the contest in the 89th minute, but White recorded his third save of the day to preserve the result.
