HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 29, 2021) – Sophomore
Amelia Rehrig netted the first two goals of her collegiate career to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team over Haverford College 3-0 Wednesday night in a non-conference match played at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
Senior
Ally Wanzor's gorgeous header in the 12th minute proved to be the game-winner for the Ducks, who returned to their winning ways in improving to 2-4-2. Claire Cywes made six saves for the Fords, who dropped their second straight in falling to 3-4-2. The Ducks have not conceded a goal in 251:12 minutes.
The Ducks applied heavy pressure from the opening whistle, with senior
Gianna Nitti firing a shot over the goal in the third minute.
An aggressive surge in the 12th minute led to a corner kick for the Ducks. As the DeBaun winds began to swirl, junior
Catalina Abusada drove a service towards the 18, where Wanzor was able to maneuver through the Haverford defense to perfectly time a header into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
Although Stevens controlled play for the majority of the first half, the Ducks were poised to enter the intermission with a one-goal lead. Rehrig changed that plan rather suddenly, scoring just 26 seconds before halftime, taking a feed from sophomore
Jana Mucci and rocketing off a shot from the edge of the 18 to double the Ducks' advantage. The assist marked Mucci's first collegiate point.
Rehrig would go on to complete her first career brace in the 88th minute, sidestepping a Haverford defender and placing the ball into the bottom-right corner of the net. The two-goal performance is the most by a Duck since alumna Julia Panko scored twice in a MAC Freedom victory over Delaware Valley on Oct. 26, 2019 and the most for a Duck rookie since current senior
Fiona Matthews scored a pair of goals in a conference win over The Sage Colleges on Sept. 15, 2018.
Wanzor's goal would be the only cushion senior
Izzy DiDario would need in posting her second clean sheet of the season. The Scotch Plains, New Jersey native made five saves to lower her career goals-against average to 0.64, which ranks 10th among active Division III goalkeepers.
Inside the Numbers
- Stevens held a 19-10 advantage in shots, including a commanding 11-2 margin in the first half. Of the Ducks' 19 attempts, nine were on target. Wanzor fired off five attempts to lead both sides, while Celia Page took four attempts to lead Haverford.
- The Ducks earned five corners against just two for Haverford. The Ducks held the Fords without a corner in the second half.
- Junior Tia Saade recorded her first collegiate point with the assist on Rehrig's second goal.
- Sophomore Morgan Whitlock drew her first career start.
- Stevens improved to 2-0 all-time against the Fords. Tonight's match marked the first meeting between the programs in 15 years.
- The victory moved head coach Jeff Parker to 297 career victories.
Unsung Hero
- In addition to her usual steady presence in the defensive half of the field, senior Nicole Veraja drew several oohs and aahs from the crowd with a few shifty moves in the midfield and a nifty back-heel pass early in the second half. She also played 90 or more minutes for the third time this season.
From the Pitch - Senior Brynn Budka
- "Tonight, it felt like we pieced some more things together as a team, and really started to connect passes in the final third. It felt great to find the back of the net! I am looking forward to building off this momentum and getting after it as we head into conference play."
From the Sidelines - Head Coach Jeff Parker
- "Another step forward from our group tonight. Not perfect or flawless, but we were able to link some excellent moments together to come away with all three points; important steps that we've been building on, and hoping it will help get us ready to host conference foe, DeSales. this Saturday."
