CANTON, N.Y. (September 4, 2021) – Senior
Izzy DiDario made four saves but Tyler Potter's goal in the 85th minute proved to be the difference as No. 14 Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer fell at St. Lawrence University 1-0 Saturday, in a non-conference fixture at Sandy MacAllaster Field.
With the teams deadlocked in a scoreless tie, a foul awarded the Saints a free kick well beyond the 18. Mia Cence drove a bending strike towards the left edge of the box. Potter one-timed the ball back across to the opposite side of the box and into the net for the lone goal of the match.
Stevens fell to 0-1 on the year, while St. Lawrence improved to 2-0. Saturday's competition marked the first meeting between the programs and was the first countable intercollegiate action for the Ducks in 651 days.
The feisty Stevens offense produced 20 shots, including 12 in the opening half. Junior
Tia Saade had perhaps the best chance on the afternoon, getting a step on the St. Lawrence defense and forcing Keely Snode to make a brilliant save. Snode finished with six stops on the day.
The Ducks had a chance to force overtime but an offside flag in the 89th minute thwarted Stevens' final threat of the match,
Inside the Numbers
- Stevens outshot St. Lawrence, 20-11, including a 12-5 margin in the opening half.
- The Ducks held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks, holding the Saints without a corner over the final 67:24 of the match.
- Junior Caitlin Carroll and sophomore Jana Mucci each drew their first collegiate start. Mucci joined classmates Morgan Whitlock, Gab Aloe, Marissa Sciorilli, Emily Leiby, Amelia Rehrig, Elsa Bley, Claire Ganley and Nina Burden, along with first-years Victoria Dalton and Olivia Castro in making their collegiate debuts. Graduate student Madison Starr made her Stevens debut.
- DiDario's four saves brought her career total to 95. The Scotch Plains, New Jersey native is aiming to become just the seventh student-athlete in program history to reach the 100-save plateau.
- With the postponement of Wednesday's scheduled season opener, today's contest marked what is believed to be the latest start to a Stevens women's soccer season in program history.
From the Sidelines - Head Coach Jeff Parker
- "I thought we did a lot of good things this afternoon. We were able to create some chances, but unfortunately, we weren't able to finish one. We feel like we've seen this story before, playing well, but not getting the result we wanted. Credit to St. Lawrence, for finding a way. Not the way we wanted to start the season and we're reviewing our performances. We'll stick to our values and use them to help us in preparation for our performance at Clarkson tomorrow."
